… Our salvation is nearer than it's ever been. The night is far spent. The day is at hand. Let us therefore wake up from our sleep and cast off the works of darkness and be Christ's men from head to foot and give no chances for the flesh to have its fling. That's a Phillips translation of Romans 13. And we can be asleep spiritually. And that's exactly what David was doing. He was idle when he should have been leading his troops into battle. It's good to take some time for rest. Even Jesus said to his own disciples, come apart by yourselves to a deserted place and rest for a while. You are the light. You're in the light. You are the light. Don't do the deeds of the darkness. What does that mean? Verse 13, let us behave properly as in the day. You make no provision for the flesh. Obviously, that's what the philosophers of the Middle Ages wanted to overturn. We make no provision for the flesh. All we want to know is the will of God, and that's what it says in verse 10, trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. …

… For now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent. The day is at hand. Therefore, let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy, but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. Oh, Lord, how we love Your law, for Your Word is law. It is the light that guides our feet and shines upon our pathway. We thank You that Your law comes to us out of the infinite depth of Your knowledge and wisdom and reflects not only the perfection of Your character, but Your gracious, condescending love for us for which law is given for our blessing and edification. …
