… Even though Solomon spoke this to his son, we of course do exactly what the book of Romans chapter 15 verse 4 says and that is that we study the word of God that all the previous things that have been written before us were written for our learning that we with patience might inherit those promises and so that is a call to study the Old Testament for sure. And so we do that. It is remarkable to realize that when we think about the wisdom of God, by now you know in this book that there's the wisdom of the world. We've learned that already and we're not going to recap that. There's the wisdom of the world, but the Bible says it's devilish, it's seductive, and it's fatal. And then there's the wisdom of God, which is life. It's meaningful, it's purposeful, and it's enduring. That is that it's eternal. And we are to choose, by the way, we are to choose, but the choices that we make are something that reveals where our real faith is at. … he did not please himself, as it is written, the insults of those who have insulted you, O God, have fallen on me. You see, everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that by the endurance and the encouragement of the scriptures we would have hope. But now the little boy who used to play with them is all grown up and headed off to college, so the old toys get donated to a childcare center. …
… For even Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, the reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me. For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we, through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures, might have hope. And now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us to the glory of God. Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers, and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy as it is written, For this reason I will confess to you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name. And again he says, rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people. And again, praise the Lord, all you Gentiles. Laud him, all you people. And again Isaiah said, there shall be a root of Jesse, and he who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, in him the Gentiles shall hope. …
