Sermons on Romans 2:1

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on another. For on whatever grounds you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Therefore you are without excuse, O man, whoever you are who judge. For in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For you who judge practice the same things. Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.Wherefore thou art without excuse, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest dost practise the same things.

Tremble at God's Word
David Platt, 2026-09-30

… God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things, but also approve of those who practice them. You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on them. For whatever point you judge the other, you're condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you'll escape God's judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance. But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you're storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed, God will give to each person according to what he has done. To those who by persistence in doing good, seek glory, honor, and mortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking, who will reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for everyone who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. But glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. …

Dr. Kevin DeYoung | No Excuse
Kevin DeYoung, 2026-04-20

… God's own heart and he hears the story and he judges correctly. That's a wicked man. He stole the poor man's one little lamb. And then Nathan says, just like Romans 2.1, you are the man. You have no excuse. You see it clearly in someone else. That's you, David. Or the story in John 8. I know it's not in the earliest manuscripts. I think it probably carries a true story of Jesus' interaction with the woman caught in adultery. The point of the story is not, hey, sin's no big deal. But you know, as they are picking up their stones, it's His way of saying to everyone, careful now. You see that adultery, that's a sin, yeah? Are you sure this is how you want to play the game? Are you sure this is how you want to play life's game? There's some people, they think, if only I had everything exactly fair. You want mom and dad to be like that. You want everything 100% fair in life. That's not what you want. …

JUDGEMENT DAY
Sam Kelly, 2025-09-28

… and this is what it says in verses one through three. You therefore have no excuse. You who pass judgment on somebody else, for whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such thing is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, Pass judgment on them and do the same things. Do you think you will escape the judgment of God? Here is what Paul is saying. You're not the judge. God is. You don't have the right to point the finger and condemn other people because you're just as guilty. Paul is saying, before you point the finger at someone else, examine yourself. And here's what'll happen. You'll slow down in your judgment of other people. Now, I don't know about you, but I am really good at seeing other people's flaws. Like, it's honestly a gift of mine. I'm really good at it. Like, man, that person's messed up. …

… look in verses 1 through 3. Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest, for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself. Your yardstick becomes a boomerang, for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Now, you, in, in, in chapter 1, the apostle Paul of Romans, he's talking about the pagan, the ungodly, the sins of the flesh. In chapter 2 he's talking about the religious man and the sins of the spirit. There are many in this building today. You dress so nicely, you look so nice, you have a Bible. You're glad to judge the thief, the prostitute, the murderer, the pimp, the drug pusher, the pervert. You wouldn't do any of those things. But your heart is headquarters for hatred. …
