… The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood. Ruin and misery mark their ways. In the way of peace, they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth is silenced. The whole world is held accountable to God. And no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law. Rather, through the law, we become conscious of sin. But now a righteousness from God apart from the law has been made known, to which the law and the prophets testify, and this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood. …
… The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood Ruin and misery mark their ways In the way of peace they do not know Like, those lyrics don't make for a great wedding song Let's pause while we reflect On the depravity of this man and this woman And we joke, but here's why this is so important. We go to all kinds of books and conferences and seminars and experts on marriage. And as long as we try externally to make things work, if the sin problem is not continually addressed in each of our hearts, then we will be putting Band-Aids on broken limbs. We need to see the problems in marriage for what they are, a war that is going on in each one of our hearts. And that's what Jesus is saying. here. But we resist this because the last place we want to look when it comes to problems in our marriages is within ourselves. Jesus says it's sin, it's hardness of heart that ultimately leads to divorce. In almost any marital conflict, there are obviously two sides to the story. …
… The venom of asps is under their lips. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood. In their paths are ruin and misery. And the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes. I had a birthday this past week. I turned 49. My kids said, don't worry, you're not old, you're not 50. So, I got that. It's amazing when you're 35, 49 seems old. Now, 79 seems pretty young to me. 49. And this may not be true for anyone else but me, but I don't always like looking at photos of myself. You're all, yep, all the rest of you are really good looking, so it's all fine for you. But, you know, sometimes as you get older, you swipe those photos, as I do, and I say, I don't like that photo. I don't like that photo. I don't like that photo. And you continue, not you, I, because you're all good looking, but I tell myself, wow, what a bad angle. …
… the poison of vipers is on their lips, their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness, their feet are swift to shed blood, ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. Those lyrics do not make for a good wedding song. Let's pause while we reflect on the depravity of this man and this woman. But here's why this is so important. Yes, for sure, even when sin's not in the picture, we still have challenges in communication or understanding or other areas of marriage. But at the core, the major problem in every marriage is sin in a husband and sin in a wife. It's a spiritual battle that's being waged in every husband and wife's heart. Ephesians 6, also in our Bible reading today, there is an adversary who wants to destroy your intimacy with God and your intimacy with your spouse. Which means that if the major problem in every marriage is sin, then the major solution for any marriage is what? …
… graves. Their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood. Ruin and misery mark their ways in the way of peace. They do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes. In other words, all people everywhere are guilty of sin before a holy God. And here's why this point is so important. Because so many times this question is asked, like someone will ask, well, Pastor, what happens to the innocent man or woman or child in this remote part of the world who's never heard the gospel when they die? And if you were to ask me that question, I would say, without question, based on the Bible, those people go to heaven, even though they've never heard the gospel. Without question, that innocent man, woman, child would go to heaven without ever hearing the gospel. Because they have no need to hear the gospel. if they are innocent of sin they don't need to hear about Jesus died to save them from sin if they're innocent of sin they'll go straight to heaven of course they'll go to heaven the only problem is those people do not exist Do you see how we bias the question from the start like toward us and our goodness and away from God? …
