… There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice because in his forbearance, he left the sins committed beforehand unpunished. He did it to demonstrate his justice in the present time so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Where then is boasting? It's excluded. On what principle? That of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles? too? Yes, of Gentiles too, since there's only one God who will judge the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. Do we then nullify the law by this faith? Not at all. …
… Romans chapter 3, for there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood to be received by faith. And then our sentences for this morning. This was to show God's righteousness because in His divine forbearance, He had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. this is according to many preachers and commentators and christians throughout history the mount everest of the bible romans 8 will come later so maybe there's a few mount everests but we are certainly in the himalayas this whole paragraph is one of if not the most important paragraph in the Bible and therefore most important and essential for each one of us. And we come at the end of this paragraph to see that Paul means to solve one of the great moral problems in the universe. …

Here's a thought experiment for you. How would you summarize the entire message of the New Testament in one sentence? In fact, that's too easy. Let's make it more difficult. Not one sentence because you could have semicolons and various subordinate clauses. how would you summarize the entire message of the New Testament in three words? What if you had just three words? In his book, Knowing God, all of you should read that. In his book, Knowing God, J.I. Packer famously gave his response to this thought experiment. It's not the only correct response, but it is J.I. Packer, so it's a pretty good one. Adoption through propitiation. Those were his three words. Adoption through propitiation. Quote, I do not expect ever to meet, Packer wrote, a richer or more pregnant summary of the gospel than that. …
For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. We come now to this great theme, one of the greatest themes of Scripture, the doctrine of justification. The word, the verb, was used earlier. Look back at chapter 2, verse 13, for it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. Though I argue that that is a negative use of the word justified, that he's laying out as he makes his case against the sinfulness of man, that it's the doers who will be justified, and he will reach then the conclusion in chapter 3, verse 20, that by works of the law, by doing, no one will be justified in his sight. So, he is introduced before this topic of justification and hinted at it, certainly, in verses 16 and 17 of chapter 1. …
… So remember, a star is a sign that announces what? Redemption. What's redemption? The price has been paid for our sins. Romans 3, 24, all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Redemption, redemption. Christ's redemptive work was sufficient for all of mankind, but it only can be applied to those of us who bow the knee and receive Christ. The star. it's weird you know uh drawing while you're talking because i'm up here i'm going okay let me talk for a while then i look back and i go man i need to really work on that that doesn't look that good it's kind of like using different parts of your brain i guess Let's go. but these wise men were we're in the in the game. They were tenacious. They followed the Lord. and God's always going to take us somewhere. somewhere amazing. Not always the places that we would choose if we're sitting on our throne like Herod, but you see, the wise men were different than Herod. …
… Let's try again. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, comma, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. So I stopped there. The atoning sacrifice. Remember, we're reading back, even time got that part. The centerpiece of our Christian faith is the atonement, the atoning sacrifice. What is that? That is what makes it possible for people who are far from God to come to know God. Atonement is the sacrifice that covers all the sin, but it also, I learned it this way, is at-one-ment. now God and us can be one no we don't become God but we become one with God the children of God born of God in relationship with God right with God friends of God walking with God future with God how by the at one meant sacrifice of Jesus Christ that happened by the shedding of his blood 10 red 11 people have seen others come with their sacrifice you know that story where jesus turned over the tables in the temple that was all about the sacrifice it was about people coming to jerusalem for the festival from a far away place jews lived all over the world at this time some would come from africa some would come from asia minor some would come from way off in asia they'd make the journey all the way to Jerusalem. And when they got there, they wanted for their family to make …
Now understand, the half of the truth that we've got is 100% true. It's just not 100% of the truth. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Justified. So what does justified mean? Merriam-Webster says that justified means to be made righteous. to be made righteous. So I am definitely not just a sinner. I'm alive in Christ. I am not even just a sinner saved by grace. I am a sinner saved by grace, justified in Christ, a new creation and a new position with God. When I was growing up and they were teaching us about justification, that big word, they said justified. It's just as if I'd never sinned. It's not me having enough righteousness to get back to the mark of the standard, the glory of God. It's God giving me in Christ a new standing with Him and a new position with Him and a new identity in him. …
This is going to be an exciting day as we study the most important paragraph in the Bible, which is Romans chapter 3, verses 21 through 28. Let's talk about the product. Whenever you're marketing, you have to have a product. So what's the product here? Jesus. It's a pretty good product, isn't it? That's who Paul is marketing. And the Bible tells us in verse 21, like I told you a second ago, but now apart from the law, apart, what? Apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been made known. Again, this is a major sea change. Paul now is talking about God rolling out this different way, this new way to have the righteousness of God through faith in Christ. So whenever you see those transitional phrases in the Bible, pay attention. But now, but now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been made known. This word known or the phrase made known is the Greek term. I love this. Fanarou. We get the word fan from this. …
… and fall short of the what? glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God has presented Jesus as a sacrifice of atonement through faith in his blood. What that means is God has chosen to pour out the judgment due sent upon his son in the place of sinners. Truth number five, God has made a way of salvation for the lost. God has made a way. We have all sinned against God. Every single person in this room, at other campuses, every single person in the world. We are all separated from God. If we die in the state of separation from God, we will spend eternity separated from God in judgment for our sin. But yes, God is loving. He loves us and has made a way for us to be saved from our sin. God has sent his son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. Jesus has taken all the payment, do your sin, my sin, upon himself on the cross. …
… Everyone needs to always say that when we get there. And are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Stay with Paul for a moment. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement. There's one of our seven words. through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness. God was trying to show people that he really is righteous because in his forbearance, he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished, all these people who lived and died before Jesus. He did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. God could do anything, and he certainly could have moved the table, but if he had moved the table, he wouldn't be just. And how could we trust and follow a God who's not just? And so he put his son. under the wrath. so he could say, you can trust me. …
