… How? by faith. And then in verse 26, to show his righteousness at the present time so that God might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. So, we have seen several times that this righteousness comes to us by faith. And now we have made clear what should have been obvious already that we are justified by faith alone. You've heard about the five solas before, a shorthand way of describing the theology of the Reformation. It's not that anyone in the Reformation put out on a sign, here are the five solas, but it's a faithful summary of some of the most important doctrines in the Reformation. And the controversy with those solas, that being the Latin word for only or alone, the controversy was not grace or faith or Christ or Scripture or God. Every Christian knows that those are massively important. The controversy was the sola, that salvation is by grace alone, meaning not with any of our cooperation. through faith alone, so that the ground of justification is not found in any accompanying works. …
… former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. this is according to many preachers and commentators and christians throughout history the mount everest of the bible romans 8 will come later so maybe there's a few mount everests but we are certainly in the himalayas this whole paragraph is one of if not the most important paragraph in the Bible and therefore most important and essential for each one of us. And we come at the end of this paragraph to see that Paul means to solve one of the great moral problems in the universe. One of the greatest ethical, theological, metaphysical, cosmological problems in the universe, and it's a problem that none of you are thinking about, likely. It's a problem that, likely, none of us have been losing sleep over this week. No one in the tall buildings working for the banks uptown is thinking about this problem. …
This is going to be an exciting day as we study the most important paragraph in the Bible, which is Romans chapter 3, verses 21 through 28. Let's talk about the product. Whenever you're marketing, you have to have a product. So what's the product here? Jesus. It's a pretty good product, isn't it? That's who Paul is marketing. And the Bible tells us in verse 21, like I told you a second ago, but now apart from the law, apart, what? Apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been made known. Again, this is a major sea change. Paul now is talking about God rolling out this different way, this new way to have the righteousness of God through faith in Christ. So whenever you see those transitional phrases in the Bible, pay attention. But now, but now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been made known. This word known or the phrase made known is the Greek term. I love this. Fanarou. We get the word fan from this. …
… through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness. God was trying to show people that he really is righteous because in his forbearance, he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished, all these people who lived and died before Jesus. He did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. God could do anything, and he certainly could have moved the table, but if he had moved the table, he wouldn't be just. And how could we trust and follow a God who's not just? And so he put his son. under the wrath. so he could say, you can trust me. I'm just. And he put his son under the wrath so that he could say, and you can trust me. I want to justify you. Oh, no. But wait. The third part of the gospel is no way. No way. You've got to be kidding me. …
