… in our sufferings. And because we understand what God is doing through our sufferings, he says in Romans 5.11, we rejoice in God Himself. I mean, to the human mind it is incomprehensible. But when you live your life backwards, as it were, when you allow your final destiny, your life is hidden with Christ in God. It's hidden from the world. The people who pass you in the street or in the office don't look at you and instinctively think that person is a Christian. And there are many times when you wonder about your own life, if you are showing any real evidences of being a Christian. Our true life may be hidden in the world, from the world, and at times even from ourselves. But here is the glorious star to which we need to look and on the basis of which navigate our way through life, that when He appears, we shall appear with Him and we shall be like Him. And surely, brothers and sisters, you sense the power of that truth when it grips you. …
… of these influences, trying to speak about the action of God in history and our human response. Scripture says, therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace, which we stand and we boast. We celebrate in our hope of sharing the glory of God. But then it goes on to say that, and not only that, but we also boast, we celebrate in our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance. And endurance produces character. Character produces hope. And hope does not put us to shame because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. This is problematic. This seems to be a contradiction. I'm supposed to boast in my affliction? Celebrate when I'm going through? I must admit, I have a problem with this. I'm called to celebrate my afflictions I'm to throw a party about my pain I'm supposed to shout about the weight the wounds, the bruises, the brokenness that is in me and has been caused upon me if I could talk to Paul for a minute I appreciate you Paul I know that you are the grand apostle and chief gospel troubadour but this is a contradiction this makes no sense in my sanctified imagination I had an argument with Paul I argued with Paul. I said, Paul, I'm concerned about this scripture. …
… through the death of his son how much more having been reconciled shall we be saved through his life Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. So can I just talk about that just for a second? What it means is, is that on one side of our ledger was a debt. And the debt was massive because we were dead. Wages of sin is death. So it wasn't just that we owed a lot, it's that we were dead. And over here is a holy God. and what the text is telling us is is that God reconciled us anybody seeking reconciliation in 2025 in a marriage or in a business relationship or with a friend and one of your hopes and dreams for 2025 is that somehow these two things that are broken will get reconciled well this is what the text is saying. God reconciled. He somehow put it back together. He somehow brought us back to God. And how did he do it? Well, he's telling us how he did it. He's telling us that he did it through the blood of Christ. That's how he brought us back together. And then he explains it. …
