… were baptized into his death. We were therefore buried with him through baptism in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead, we too may live a new life. If we've been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him, that the body of sin will be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin, because anyone who's died has been freed from sin. Now, if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, because we know since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again. Death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin. Once for all, the life he lives, he lives to God. So in the same way, count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies so that you obey its evil desires. …

… do you not know romans chapter 6 verse 3 says that all of us who have been baptized into christ jesus were baptized into his death we were buried therefore with him by baptism into death in order that just as christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father we too might walk in newness of life. Paul is highlighting this personal connection between receiving a sign and receiving real spiritual benefits from our Redeemer. The seminary professor R. Scott Clark uses really helpful language. He explains that the seal of baptism testifies that what is true in general is really true for you. Yes, Christ can wash away sins. Yes, his Holy Spirit can change people. And for those who receive baptism by faith, Christ has washed away all of your sins, and his Holy Spirit will change you. sometimes on Sunday mornings we will have several baptisms. We're blessed in a church of this size to sometimes these three, four, five, several baptisms in one day, and there is a reason, even though it would be much more efficient and we would get to lunch quicker, there's a reason that we don't walk all of these babies up here and get one of those kind of waving sprinklers, just do them all at one time, and then let them sit back down, go outside, and dry off. …
… So listen to the next verse. Therefore, we were buried with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of his death, certainly we will also be in the likeness of his resurrection. So Jesus went to the cross bearing your sin. When he died, it was as if you died. That's the identification part. When Jesus emerged from the tomb victorious with life, he bore your new life. In the book of Acts, chapter 8, the Spirit spoke to Philip and said, Go toward the south on the road which goes from Jerusalem to Gaza. And so as Philip was traveling on that road, he overtook a chariot, and a man was driving the chariot. He was an Ethiopian man, the Ethiopian eunuch. He was the treasurer working for the queen of the Ethiopians named Candace. And the man had pulled his chariot off to the side of the Roman road, and he was in the driver's seat of the chariot, and he was reading his Bible. …
… and there is a new self that has been raised with him. Romans 6 verse 4. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, where we too may walk in newness of life. these are glorious promises for our sanctification. Now this doesn't mean that we won't or don't battle with sin. It doesn't mean that we don't struggle or strive with sin. It just changes everything about how we struggle and how we battle and how we strive with sin. Scriptures tell us we are no longer enslaved to sin And it no longer has dominion over us. That means it no longer controls us or has mastery over us. Why? Because we've died with Christ into sin. And we are raised to live more and more unto righteousness. so the chains of sin have been broken for us and all of this amounts to working out the implications of our salvation and the process of our sanctification as Paul says in Philippians chapter 2, 12 through 13 we all know this text work out your salvation in fear and trembling because it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. …

Just think with me as we read these. To me this is a this is a chapter that's a continuous electric shock chapter. It just kind of is there to make sure my heart is beating in tune with his. So look at this again. He says, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life. Our walk should be consistent with the reality of the resurrection. the resurrection defines the reality of the Christian life. All right, that went over well. Let's move on to verse five. For we have been united together in the likeness, if we have been united together in the likeness of his death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection. …
… Listen to how Paul says it in Romans chapter 6. baptism into His death so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too would walk in new life. Because if we have been united with Him like this in His death, then we will certainly be united with Him in His resurrection. We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin would be brought to nothing so that we would no longer be slaves to sin because the one who has died has been set free from sin. Now, if we have died with Christ, we trust that we will also live with Him. Seeing that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again, death no longer has dominion over Him. Because the death He died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. So also, count yourselves as dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, do not let sin rule over your mortal body to make you obey its passions, and do not offer your limbs, your members to sin as instruments for its unrighteous purposes. …
… doing a mighty work on the inside than he ever would be on the outside. Somebody clap and praise the Lord. He'll just mess with you on the inside of you. Romans 6 verse 4, we were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father, we too may live a new life. I've got a new life that's found in Jesus and I'm going to live that new life. It was not a moment for me to just raise my hand in a service. It was a moment to set me down a path of God's plan and God's will for my life. I am no longer living for me. I am now living to follow Jesus. I am no longer praying what I want. I am now asking God what he wants. I am not doing my thing. I am now living for his thing. That's how you know you got swept up in grace. Not that you had a moment to say yes, but you continually are being transformed by the renewing of your mind to become who God has called you to become in your life. That's grace. And you just watch it in people. You just see it over time. If you're frustrated with somebody today, just pray for them. God will heal them. God will take care of them. God will build up their life. His kindness will lead them to repentance. Somebody say amen. …
… were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. you get to see that you are dead to sin through something called baptism, which is often referred to as the outward expression of an inward decision, going public with your faith. And when you look at life in general, typically anytime anything major takes place in your life, you do something externally to show it. Like you graduate from high school, you graduate from college, you graduate with the doctorate, you have a graduation ceremony. When you get married, you've got the wedding reception, the wedding party, the wedding ceremony. And the external thing is pointing to the greater thing, which is the covenant between one man and one woman for life. That's what baptism is. It's this external expression of the greatest internal decision you could ever make in your entire life. …

Now he's waiting and depending on you to do your part. …
… or immersed into Christ Jesus have been immersed into His death. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death." Again, the depth of this metaphor takes you down to as far as you can go. You can't have anything more transformative than to be dead and then come to life. This is not like some minor alteration. We have been buried with Him through baptism into death, just as Christ was raised from dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. If we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him in order that our body of sin might be done away with." Really? The body of sin is done away with? Yeah, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin, for He who has died is freed from sin.
