… He comes to shed his own blood, which is here in Zechariah 9, verse 11. Because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Not free from Rome. Not free from Greeks merely. Free from Hades. Free from hell. This is far bigger. And so Jesus at the Last Supper will say, this is the blood of the covenant. This is my blood of the covenant, which is shed for you. finally verse 13 he comes to gather all nations we already saw in verse 10 that he shall speak peace to all nations and then this is so amazing verse 13 mentions greece i will stir up your sons o zion against your sons o greece Let's do this. that's the power that Zechariah 500 years before Jesus is anticipating by now that power's passed in the first century Rome has the power and yet it's amazing thing this is the next place where John is going to go we'll see this next week that brings us back to John 12 19 to finish the Pharisees said to one another, you see that you are gaining nothing. …
"As for you also, by the blood of your covenant Have set forth your prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. Turn you to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope: even today do I declare that I will render double unto you." Zechariah 9:11,12. [Another Sermon by Mr. Spurgeon on the same text, is #2839 , Volume 49— "PRISONERS OF HOPE"] THIS morning, [See Sermon #1186, Volume 20—THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT]. I tried to show that in consequence of the blood of the Covenant having been shed and the Covenant having so been fulfilled, Jesus Christ was brought back out of the prison of the grave, set at liberty and exalted to indescribable Glory in the highest Heaven. I then showed that Jesus Christ is the Representative of all His people— that when He was set free, they were virtually set free, and that when He returned into Glory, He went there as their Representative, taking possession of the heavenly places in their name, so that, in due time, where He is, there they may also be. I had not time, this morning, to make a fitting application of our subject. But happily for us, here stands another text, an older one, and yet most suitable to come after the other, so I will use it now. …
"As for you, also, by the blood ofyour Covenant I have sent forth your prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water." Zechariah 9:11. [Two other Sermons by Mr. Spurgeon upon this same subject are #277, Volume 5—THE BLOOD OF THE EVERLASTING COVENANT and #1186, Volume 20—THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT.] [Two other Sermons by Mr. Spurgeon upon Verses 11 and 12 are #2839, Volume49—"PRISONERS OF HOPE" and #2883, Volume 50—PRISONERS DELIVERED.] THE LORD is here speaking to His ancient people, Israel. That nation had always been preserved, although other nations had been destroyed—and the reason was that God had entered into a Covenant with Abraham on their behalf. Circumcision was the sign and seal of the Covenant, so that God could truly speak of "the blood of your Covenant." The Jews have never ceased to be a nation, though they have been scattered, peeled and delivered over into the hand of their adversaries because of their sins. They may enjoy various rights and privileges in the different countries where they sojourn for a while, but they cannot be absorbed into the nationalities by which they are surrounded. They must always be a separate and distinct people—but the day shall yet come when the branches of the olive tree, which have been so long cut off, shall be grafted in again. Then shall they, as a nation, again behold the Messiah, the true and only King of the Jews—and their fullness shall be the fullness of the Gentiles, also! …
