… eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick. and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. God, we pray that You would open our eyes to understand Your Word this morning. In particular, the meaning of the Lord's Supper. God, we pray that Your Spirit would help us to grasp the significance of communion and to see how it affects the way we worship you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. What I want us to do is ask some basic questions about the Lord's Supper. Across this room, there are a variety of religious backgrounds. Many of you have not grown up in church. Many of you have grown up in church. Even if you've grown up in church, there's a variety of different religious backgrounds that are represented, denominational backgrounds that are represented in this room. …
And he gives that warning. He says, you better examine the body before you take the bread or cup, because if you take it in an unworthy manner, he goes, that's why some of you are weak and sick and a number of you have died. Don't you read that and go, wait, if that happened back then, how come it's not happening today or is it? And we just don't notice it. don't you look at some of these things and go wow but but what is it why are these passages why is that story with king Uzzah so bothersome to us it's because we don't understand this word sacred okay that God says you don't get it you just don't if I say don't touch that that arc you just don't touch it. It's sacred. And we don't understand that. We're a society of second chances. Come on, that's not that big a deal. This guy's done worse. I'm not Hitler. I'm not this. I'm not that. So I'm pretty good. That's the world we grew up in. And so we don't understand this word sacred. We don't understand when something is of God and he says, don't touch it. You just don't touch it. Right? And we look at what Moses did in striking the rock, and God says, you didn't treat me as sacred. You didn't treat my word as sacred. Saul went into the temple and offered, you don't do that. I don't care. That's a command from the Lord. You have no right to do that. …
… don't you read 1 Corinthians 15 or 1 Corinthians 11 and it's talking about you know many of you are weak and sick and a number of you have fallen asleep because I didn't examine the body and blood I because I didn't take communion in there I mean they're sacred things and these thoughts come through my mind you know and and and as I'm praying. It's just this sense that, yes, God has shown a lot of grace. A lot, a lot, a lot. but we have to get serious about this issue of what comes out of our mouth, and whether it's just words of life to the rest of the temple, that may not think as well as you, may not experience as much as you, to be careful that you're not taking a sledgehammer. That's why in Titus, he says, look, warn a divisive person once. warn warn warn him again and then have nothing to do with him he doesn't say that about other sins but with division he goes hey that person that's trying to take a sledgehammer to the church to his holy temple god's going to destroy him so you better warn him warn hey dude put the hammer down put the hammer down you know people that come from other churches and go, oh yeah, my last church, they did this to me, but now you're here. …
