… the joy of investing in God's work. And by the way, that is the principle that Paul taught the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 16 verse 2. I want you to turn over to 1 Corinthians 16 verse 2, where Paul describes the relationship between financial margin and supporting God's work. Now, many of you have heard this verse before. You've probably seen it on an offering envelope before, but never really understood what it's teaching. 1 Corinthians 16, verse 2, Paul said to the Corinthian church, on the first day of every week, let each one of you put aside and save as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come. Now, a lot of people interpret this verse to say, okay, on the first day of the week, you ought to give your offering to support the local church. That's not what it's talking about. The Bible does teach we ought to give and give generously to support the ministry of the local church. The local church is God's design to fulfill the Great Commission. …

Generosity in Community
David Platt, 2025-09-10

… And at the end of that book, 1 Corinthians chapter 16, verse one through four, what he had done is he had told them that he wanted to take up a collection for the impoverished church in Jerusalem, impoverished saints in Jerusalem. And so he told them, I'm gonna take up an offering. And they expressed an eagerness about that. The only problem is time went by and they had not collected. They were not giving. And Paul was traveling to other places and was collecting money. We're going to see him reference how he had collected money from the churches in Macedonia, which were very poor churches. We'll look at that in a second. And so what he's doing here in these two chapters is he is reminding them to give. And these two chapters are so insightful because they show us how Scripture exhorts us to give. and I think we see a much different picture here in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 than we see in the world how the world tells us to give and even how we think of giving in the church is radically different than from what than what Paul's going to show us here in 2 Corinthians chapter 8 verse 9 how does scripture teach us to give what we're going to do is we're going to read two passages one in chapter 8 and one in chapter 9 and basically the first one 2 Corinthians chapter 8 verse 1 through 9 is an example. Paul points to these churches in Macedonia. We're going to see him kind of lift …

… THE DISCIPLES CAME TOGETHER TO BREAK BREAD, PAUL PREACHED UNTO THEM. FIRST CORINTHIANS 16 VERSE 2, UPON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK, LET EVERY ONE OF YOU LAY BY HIM IN STORE, THAT GOD, AS GOD HATH PROSPERED HIM. THAT IS, YOU TO BRING YOUR GIFTS TO GOD ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK. WE'RE TO COME TO CHURCH AND HONOR OUR LORD BECAUSE HE'S FIRST. HE HAS THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK. THE BIBLE SAYS IN HEBREWS CHAPTER 10 VERSE 25, WE'RE NOT TO FORSAKE THE ASSEMBLY OF OURSELVES TOGETHER AS THE MANNER OF SOME IS, BUT EXHORTING ONE ANOTHER. AND SO MUCH THE MORE AS YOU SEE THE DAY APPROACHING, AS WE GET CLOSER TO THE END TIME, YOU NEED MORE AND MORE AND MORE TO BE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD WITH THE PEOPLE of God, to hear the Word of God and to exhort one another on the first day of the week. Sunday is the Lord's Day. We've made it everything else. We've made it a time for football, baseball, fishing, uh, uh, motor car racing and all of the rest of it. Friends, Sunday needs to be set aside for Jesus Christ. It is the Lord's Day. It is not the Sabbath. …

… Corinthians chapter 6, the Bible teaches that the church is the temple of God. And so the Apostle Paul said in first Corinthians chapter 16 verse 2, upon the first day of the week, let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him. And the word in store is translated in the Septuagint, Septuagint in the Old Testament, storehouse. It's the same word. Storehouse in the Old Testament, in store in the New Testament. What's he saying? We just bring to the storehouse, to God's temple on God's day, God's tithe, that God's work will be done in God's way. There's a definite proportion. Bring all the tithe. And my dear friend, there is a designated place you bring it to the storehouse. Your tithe is not to be used for other good things, not to be used to help your relatives who need help, not to be used for a Loveworth finding or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or something else. Thank God for these things. We ought to give to them, but we give over and above our tithe. My dear friend, God's tithe is to be brought to God's house on God's day that God's work will be done in God's way. Upon the first day of the week, let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him. Bring you all the tithe into the storehouse. That is what God's Word says and I believe it, my dear friend. Now, …
