Sermons on 1 Samuel 16:7

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Jehovah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

Filled By Faith!
Steven Furtick, 2026-08-24

… week. Filled by faith. You know there's both in the room, right? It's a big church. 1 Samuel 16, verses 1 through 13. Epic Scripture with an everyday application. I never want my sermons to be image-rich and principle-poor, meaning that I just give you a lot of symbols, abstractions, but never get to the application. Today we're going to talk very plainly about your feelings. We're only going to talk about it for a little while, because the main thing is not your feelings. It's your filling. 1 Samuel 16, verse 1. The Lord said to Samuel, "'How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king in Bethlehem.'" This will not be the last king to be found in Bethlehem, by the way. I said, keep an eye on Bethlehem. Unexpected kings come from Bethlehem. …

… When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the Lord. But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. Listen close to me. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. So I want to preach a little about verse 6. It says, Samuel saw Eliab and thought surely. How many times have you gotten trouble in your life? Because you saw and thought surely. You saw and thought surely. And you held so hard to what you thought because of what you saw that God couldn't show you what he wanted because you were so sure about what you thought. The reason he thought Eliab was the one is that Eliab was tall. Guess who else was tall? Saul. So the first thing Samuel wanted to do was pour the oil on somebody who reminded him of the past. But God said, I'm done with the past. I'm doing a new thing in your life. I'm doing a new thing in this generation. I'm doing a new thing in this church. I'm doing a new thing in your family. …

Hand Him The Plan
Steven Furtick, 2025-08-18

… But the Lord said to Samuel… Keep that phrase right there in front of you for a moment. But the Lord said to Samuel, do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. people look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. Now I'm ready to move to my second point. Many are the thoughts in a person's heart. My second point is in a person's heart. If you put Proverbs 19, verse 21 back up again, He says, Many are the plants in a person's heart. Now, the problem with David and the problem with you and the problem with me, if I'm going to be honest about it, is that the same place where God speaks to us is the place where the enemy does, our heart. The same place where God speaks to us is the same place we have to store the opinions of others. our heart. Now, in the Hebrew language, the word heart and mind are often used interchangeably, so that if you read some translations of Proverbs 19, 21, it says, Many are the plans in a man's mind. There was no distinction in the Bible. They didn't say, Don't think this one through with your head. Think it through with your heart. …
