Rev. David Malcolm McGruder & Rev. Thomas H. Garner, 2026-09-02

… read the word of God. I want to read them in the order that you read them, beginning with 1 Samuel chapter 22 verses 1 through 5. This is from the New International Version that David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and fathers and his father's household heard about it, they went down to him there. Verse 2, all those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him and he became their commander. about 400 men were with him from there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God is going to do for me so he left them with the king of Moab and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold. But the prophet Gad said to David, do not stay in the stronghold, go into the land of Judah. So David left and went to the forest of Heret. All of those who were in distress and those who were in debt and those who were discontented gathered around him and David became their commander. About 400 men were there with him. From there David went to Mishpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, would you let my father and my mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me in the midst of this identity crisis. So he left them there with the king of Moab and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold. Then verse number five says, but the prophet of Gad said to David, do not stay in the stronghold. Go to the land of Judah. And then from there we get more context to what David is feeling like in the midst of this identity crisis when we read Psalm 142 David writes these words and he says I cried aloud to …

It says it like this. The prophet said to David, you ready? Don't go back to the cave. Return to Judah. Don't go back to the cave. Look at that. Go to Judah. Don't go back to old ways. Go to Judah. Don't go back to confusion. Go to Judah. Don't go back to that jacked up relationship. Go to Judah. Don't go back to consuming stuff that you've stopped consuming. Go to Judah. Don't get hooked up with crowds you know that God has brought you out of. Go to Judah. what do you mean Javon well the last time I checked Judah means praise I really want to say thank you for joining us this week. …
