… actually cleanse us. Think about these verses and just let them wash over you if you're struggling with genuine repentance. Here's 1 Timothy 1 15. This is a trustworthy saying. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. John 3 17. Jesus himself says, God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned. How about 1 John 1 9? If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. As we're repenting, that comes to life for us. And it did for David. You can see there's a turn. I'm going to be clean because God can do that. He didn't have it fully revealed, but we do. We see Christ. We know why God can say that. It's because of Christ. These truths are incredibly powerful for the true repenter. They allow him to truly die to the old self because this Christ came exactly for their ugliest sin. You're not in a position that Christ did not come to die for. That's exactly why he came. And that comes to life in true repentance. Here's a second way that rising to new life looks. …
… One of the early followers of Jesus said it this way, This is a saying worthy of full acceptance. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. But for this very reason, I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might show his perfect patience as an example for those who would trust in him for eternal life. 1 Timothy 1, 15 and 16. Do you want more patience? Look for mercy and compassion, because wherever mercy and compassion are, there is patience. Look to the mercy and compassion God has shown you, first from Jesus, then also from others. How many people have put up with you, slowed down for you, waited on you, made space to include you, Even if they didn't know it, they were, in part, fulfilling God's expectations for the good of his creation and for his creatures. See, patience is not idleness or empty acceptance. It's not crabby, joyless, spineless submission to whatever evil comes. …
It says, here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason, I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience or let's put in the word grace there, his immense grace as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Some of you are living like your past has power over the purposes and the plans that God has for you today. With every eye closed, I want to pray right now.
… He will save His people from their sins. In the words of 1 Timothy 1.15, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Nothing produces greater joy in heaven than the seeking and saving work of God. Go back to chapter 15 in Luke, very, very dramatic chapter where our Lord told three stories, one about a lost sheep, another about a lost coin, and then finally about a lost son. In each case, the sheep was found, the coin was found, and the prodigal son was found. And then you get a commentary immediately on how important that seeking and finding was. If you go back to verse 7, the last verse in the story about the sheep, I tell you that in the same way as there was joy in finding the sheep from verse 6, I tell you in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. If you're in the category of those who think they're righteous, you bring no joy to heaven. …
