… St. Paul says God our Savior wants all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2 verse 4. So the sower scattering seed on all kinds of ground is not careless. It's the lavish love of God to get his saving word into every kind of heart. However, the disciples didn't understand the parable of the sower. Because the crowd that heard the story had true followers of Jesus and also critics, people out to get him, Jesus spoke cryptically. When the disciples were alone with Jesus, they asked him to explain. That's important. As a teacher, I often slip into stories of experiences in my life. I do that because the story makes a point about the lesson we are covering in class. When I launch into a story, the students stop taking notes and lean back. They think it is entertainment time. No, this story makes a point you need to learn. So, when Jesus' critics had left, the disciples asked what the parable meant. …
… this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator. One go-between. One arbitrator. One umpire. There is one God. Don't forget that in this in this era of many gods, don't you tell one another that all the gods are the same. Don't you believe that lie? There is one God, the creator God. It is not Allah. It is the living God of the scriptures. There is one God. And there is one mediator between this God of the heavens who has made us and all things pertaining to us and humanity on this earth. And he has identified there is one mediator, the man Christ Jesus. There are not many. The way is narrow. Don't believe the lie. Don't be afraid to be that specific. I hear people struggle with specificity. When I hear people struggle with that, I think, do you want people to be specific about the flights you take? …

Why? Because they did not receive the love of the truth that they might be saved. Now, God doesn't want that. Paul said to Timothy, God desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, but he won't force it. He will honor your choice. When it comes to eternity, God is pro-choice. he's not pro-choice in the moral issue but he is pro-choice when it comes to eternity if a person says no i don't want god i want to go to hell okay it's not what god wants but if that's what really you want he will honor your choice in contrast to all of that, because the first 12 verses are seminal. They're very provocative, but very important. The first 12 verses are all about the doom of the Antichrist and his followers. Now we have a shift from the doom of the Antichrist and his followers to the delight of Christ followers, of the Thessalonians. In contrast to them, He's now trying to encourage them. But, verse 13, we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, beloved by the Lord. Because God from the beginning chose you for salvation. …
… Now why? Who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. Well, now he puts it in a very explicitly theological framework. What's at least one of the purposes of political authority is to allow for salvation, meaning, it seems to me, providing the context and conditions for a flourishing religiosity. We'll speak of religious liberty quite correctly. The free exercise of religion, we say, in our American context. Well, quite right. That's one of the purposes of government is to allow for religion to flourish. and so everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth, that knowledge might be shared, that there might be the conditions that make real learning possible. Think here of Thomas Jefferson. He would say one of the purposes of government is to provide for education. See, beautiful. Don't demonize power as though it's just a bad thing. It's just oppressive. No, no. Pray, pray for those in authority, for all these reasons, that we might have the basic tranquility we need to flourish, that we might even be free to worship God properly, that we might have our dignity and rights preserved. …
… because he gave himself freely and unselfishly in obedience to the will of his father, who would have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. The Son of God was raised from the dead and declared to be both Lord and Christ. He is our brother who knows our needs. He walks shoulder to shoulder with each one of us through the jungle of life and through the valley of death. Moses was a great man, a colossus of history, administrator, lawgiver, military leader, and judicial genius. He was a stuttering man of destiny, however, a stubborn and reluctant servant of the living God. The law came by Moses, but grace and truth through Jesus Christ. No reluctant servant he, no stammerer or stutterer he, Have faith in Christ and follow him. Make his destiny your own. In him is life, and his life is the light of men. Remember how he said, If you believed Moses, you would have believed me, for he wrote of me. …
