They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire separated and came to rest on each other. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit And began to speak in other tongues As the Spirit enabled them This is the word of God Amen You may be seated The spirit came On Pentecost In personal power Unusual Unrepeatable Unstrained power In wind and fire And the word of God says On the day of Pentecost something happened. Both my aunties were the secretaries at Lounge Unity Missionary Baptist Church, Barbara Davis and Jewel Harrison. and they prepared the church program for Sunday, a thick program, and then we had a church clerk, Sister Tolliver, and she would read the whole program. …
… Well, our best guess is that it came by those who were there at Pentecost. In Acts 2.10, we read that on that day of Pentecost, there were some Jews who were in town for the festival. And when the Holy Spirit came, in Peter's sermon there, some were from Rome. So, likely these Jews came to Christ, returned to Rome, and perhaps that dates the founding of the church, maybe around A.D. 30. As we'll see, there are both Jews and Gentiles in this church. We have both Jewish names and Gentile names in chapter 16. He often seems to be addressing Gentiles in particular, helping them not to take a position of pride relative to the Jews. But other times he turns and he's talking to the Jews. So there seemed to be a mixed congregation of both Jews and Gentiles. When? When did Paul write this letter? Well, we can piece together with a fair amount of certainty the historical situation surrounding this letter. There are a number of clues. …

Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, what does this mean? Somehow, I ever made fun of them and said they have had too much wine. These guys are loaded. What in the world is going on here? Awaken our affections so that we obey your spirit. Now, these verses that we just read are so packed full of meaning. In order to understand what's going on here, we've got to understand some of the background of the Old Testament. So we're going to do some turning for a couple minutes, And I want you to see some things unfold in Scripture that are just amazing about the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives and the role of the Holy Spirit in the church. …
I'll be looking at the New International Version but also the OM3 translation. As you all know, I like to translate scripture with contemporary language. And so we'll be looking at Acts chapter 2 verses 1 through 13. It'll be coming up on the screen for you and I would invite you to mark it down in your Bible or place a marker in your Bible app, however you are reading the Word of God and if you want to go back and study. Let's begin with Acts chapter 2 beginning with verse 1 and it reads as follows. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, the divine breath, the pure breath of God, and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem, God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. …
