1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the interior and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciplesWhile Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples. And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:2and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” “No,” they answered, “we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.3“Into what, then, were you baptized?” Paul asked. “The baptism of John,” they replied. He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism.4Paul explained: “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.”Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.5On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.6And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke with other languages and prophesied. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.7There were about twelve men in all. They were about twelve men in all.And all the men were about twelve. And they were in all about twelve men.8Then Paul went into the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.He entered into the synagogue and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom. And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.9But when some of them stubbornly refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way, Paul took his disciples and left the synagogue to conduct daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.10This continued for two years, so that everyone who lived in the province of Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the word of the Lord. This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.11God did extraordinary miracles through the hands of Paul,God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:12so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and the diseases and evil spirits left them.so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out.So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out.13Now there were some itinerant Jewish exorcists who tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits. They would say, “I command you by Jesus, whom Paul proclaims.”But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.14Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.15But one day the evil spirit responded, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?16Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. The attack was so violent that they ran out of the house naked and wounded. The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.17This became known to all the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, and fear came over all of them. So the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.18Many who had believed now came forward, confessing and disclosing their deeds. Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds. And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.19And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books and burned them in front of everyone. When the value of the books was calculated, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.20So the word of the Lord powerfully continued to spread and prevail. So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.21After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must see Rome as well.”Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.22He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed for a time in the province of Asia.Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season. And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.23About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way.And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.24It began with a silversmith named Demetrius who made silver shrines of Artemis, bringing much business to the craftsmen. For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;25Demetrius assembled the craftsmen, along with the workmen in related trades. “Men,” he said, “you know that this business is our source of prosperity.whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.26And you can see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in nearly the whole province of Asia, this Paul has persuaded a great number of people to turn away. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all.You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands. Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:27There is danger not only that our business will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and her majesty deposed—she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world.”Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.28When the men heard this, they were enraged and began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.29Soon the whole city was in disarray. They rushed together into the theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia. The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel. And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.30Paul wanted to go before the assembly, but the disciples would not allow him. When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.31Even some of Paul’s friends who were officials of the province of Asia sent word to him, begging him not to venture into the theatre.Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater. And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.32Meanwhile the assembly was in turmoil. Some were shouting one thing and some another, and most of them did not even know why they were there. Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together. Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.33The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander forward to explain himself, and he motioned for silence so he could make his defense to the people. They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people. And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people. And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defence unto the people.34But when they realized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.35Finally the city clerk quieted the crowd and declared, “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t everyone know that the city of Ephesus is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus? And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?36Since these things are undeniable, you ought to be calm and not do anything rash.Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash.Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.37For you have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed our temple nor blasphemed our goddess. For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess. For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.38So if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open and proconsuls are available. Let them bring charges against one another there. If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.39But if you are seeking anything beyond this, it must be settled in a legal assembly. But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly. But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.40For we are in jeopardy of being charged with rioting for today’s events, and we have no justification to account for this commotion.”For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.41After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly. When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly. And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly. And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
