… So let's look now at what Peter says. Acts chapter two, verse 36. He gets up and says these words to the people gathered. Everyone in Israel know for certain the Lord God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah. Peter's words pierced their hearts. And they said to him and the other apostles, Brothers, what should we do? Peter replied, Every one of you should repent of your sins and turn to God and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, those who are far away, and to all who have called on the Lord our God. Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all the listeners, save yourselves from this crooked generation. Those who believe what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day, about 3,000 in all. Wow, stop there. …

He continued preaching for a long time. See long sermons are good sometimes, people. But anyway. He continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all the listeners, save yourselves from this crooked generation. …
… but he himself says, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ. This Jesus whom you crucified. you crucified him Peter says God has crowned him he is Lord and Christ Jesus spoke about himself before the council just before he was crucified he said to the Jewish council you will see the son of man seated with power at the right hand Paul speaks about this in Romans 8.34 and other places. Peter can speak about it in 1 Peter 3.22. This reign of Jesus, friends, is universal. All things, every nation, every leader, every spiritual being, every person, every planet, under the feet of Jesus. But His reign is especially significant for the church. Apostle Paul in Ephesians 1, 20-23 says, God raised him from the dead, seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. …
… word must be central in our worship. And it's because of the word's effect. Because of the word's effect. I want you to look with me at Acts chapter 2, verse 36. Acts chapter 2, verse 36. This is the end, kind of the climax of Peter's sermon. He says, therefore, let all Israel be assured of this. God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. When the people heard this, they were cut to their heart. Look at their reaction. They were cut to the heart, and they said to Peter and the other apostles, brothers, what shall we do? Peter replied, repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call. With many other words, he warned them and he pleaded with them, save yourselves from this corrupt generation. …
… And then he comes to a conclusion. Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this. God has made the Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. What I want you to see as we read through this first Christian sermon is that it is packed full of Old Testament Scripture. This sermon had authority in Acts chapter 2 because it was saturated with the Word. You've got just about half of the verses that are describing the sermon here that are direct quotations from the Old Testament. Peter knew that if he was going to stand to speak with authority on this particular day, he had a responsibility to stand and to use the Word of God. That was where the authority would come from. And what we see from the very beginning is a precedent being set in public worship for the word to saturate the worship of the church, for the word to saturate what happens when the believers gather together. I had it described to me when I went to seminary to study under a good friend of mine named Dr. Jim Shaddix. …
… all witnesses of the fact. Then it comes to a culmination in verse 36, that all Israel be assured of this. God has made this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. This whole sermon is about what God is doing, and it's God-centered. Now, in light of that, preacher exposing the voice of God and exalting the greatness of God, I want us to begin to think about how this is looking in our culture today. In our worship or in our preaching, would you say that our preaching and our worship is more man-centered or is it more God-centered? What are the questions we ask each other when we walk out of this room? Well, what'd you think? Did you get anything out of that? How'd that help you out? How many times do we walk away and over lunch on Sunday afternoon, we sit around and have a discussion about what God thought of our worship service? Man-centered or God-centered? And I'll take part of the blame for this. I think preachers are much to blame for this because we have taken the Word and put such a man-centered emphasis on it that we have lost sight completely of the God-centered crux of this book. This book is a book not about us, but about Him primarily. …
