… Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, why did the Gentiles rage and the peoples plod in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed. For truly, in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant, Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness while you stretch out your hand to heal and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. Amen. Just a brief prayer, an old Anglican prayer. Father, what we know not, teach us, what we have not give us, what we are not make us. We ask it in Christ's name. Amen. …
… of the earth, all the people in the world all bow down to him. He is sovereign over everything. The early church knew this. Did you catch that in Acts chapter 4 verse 23 through 31? When they came together to pray, here they are experiencing persecution and they come together and how do they address God? Do you remember? It said, sovereign Lord. Sovereign Lord. It's in verse 24. Sovereign Lord, they declared. The word literally means despot, despot, the one who has all authority and all dominion and all rule. And that was huge for them. When you're experiencing persecution, when your family is being threatened and you're experiencing attacks from different sides, it's good to look up and see that God is still in control, that he's still on the throne. And it's the same picture we see in Acts chapter 12. You've got the king, Herod, pitted against the true king, the king to whom all kings bow down. And you've got the power of King Herod and him having Peter put in prison and have James beheaded. …
… blossom. The same word that Paul uses here for cultivate is used in Acts 4, verse 25 to talk about the nation's plotting, conspiring. It happens quietly, behind closed doors. It's unseen, and then someday it has public implications. Second, verse 15, immerse yourself in them, he says. this is be in them exist in them live in them saturate yourself in them soak yourself in the scriptures last night in the discussion Piper had his Bible and he said immerse yourself here using the language the same way Paul is right here in 1 Timothy chapter 4. Immerse yourself. Be in the Word. Be in the Scriptures. Last verse 16. Keep a close watch on yourself. Literally, fix your attention on yourself and on your teaching. So I count those three aspects of Paul's iceberg charge here to Timothy. The first, First, cultivate in private what lies beneath good public teaching, what lies beneath a model public life. There are habits of mind, habits of heart to be cultivated and to have expression someday in the 10%. …
… You start with sovereign Lord, you made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father, David. And then they're quoting now to God, his own word. Why do the nations rage and the people's plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one. And then they recap. There's a lot of recapping going on in these people's preaching and praying. Indeed, Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant, Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. that's why we're calling you sovereign lord people do what you already decided ahead of time they're going to do because you made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them and you have a plan and your plan according to job 42 will not be thwarted now lord consider their threats and eliminate them. …
