… who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control will transform our lowly bodies so they will be like his glorious body we can continue on Colossians chapter 3 verse 10 talks about how we're putting on the image of Christ, the new man, day in and day out. 2 Peter 1, verse 3 and 4 talks about how we are maturing into the image of God. 1 John 3, verse 2 says that one day we will be like him. We will be transformed into his presence. This is the whole agenda, the whole purpose of the Bible. Don't miss it. To show us the glory of Christ and to bring us, transform us into the image of Christ. Now, at this point, I want us to dive a little deeper into our contemporary context and why the Word must be central in worship. The Word's purpose is to show us Christ and to make us look more like Christ. We've got that on the table, right? …
… even things you don't understand, are working together toward. So Colossians chapter three, verse nine and 10, let's put off the old self with its practices. Let's put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. This is the purpose of your life, to be conformed into the image of your creator. So let this soak in. Takeaways today, man or woman, every man or woman made in the image of God, that's all of you. You have sacred dignity. So worship God with humility. You, let this soak in right where you're sitting right now. You have sacred, holy dignity. Unlike anything else in all creation, you are made in the image of God. So yes, look at the Grand Canyon to see God's glory. Look at the sunrise over the mountains. Look at the sunset over the horizon and see God's glory. Look at the billions of stars in the sky at stellar galaxies and see God's glory. But do you really want to see God's glory? …
… You laid aside the old self, and when it went, all its evil practices went as well. And verse 10, you put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created Him." In other words, the new self is God-like. So you have died. Parallel to that, Paul says, that would be you laid aside the old self. You have been raised. Parallel to that, you have put on the new self. Have died corresponds to laid aside, been raised corresponds to put on. Those four verbs basically tell us what salvation does. It is a death and a resurrection. It is the removal of an old self which is replaced by a new self. This is powerful language. This gets to the core of the identity of a Christian. Let me show you Paul's language with regard to this in the sixth chapter of Romans, Romans chapter 6. And the language is consistent and particularly definitive here in Romans 6. …
… because I just didn't give the office the proper notice, is let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. It comes at the very end of all this sweeping chapter on how to change, on a changed heart. And there's a parallel to it in Philippians 4. And in Philippians 4, Paul says, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. For I have learned the secret of being content, whatever the circumstances, whether well-fed or hungry, whether in plenty or in want. Now, what's the principle here? Let me use one more illustration from Pride and Prejudice. My illustrations tend to come in clusters, if you notice. And there's a place near the end of the book where the central character, Lizzie Bennett, one of her sisters is engaged to be married. I wish you could find a man and be as happy as me. Well, now, Lizzie's response is interesting because on the one hand, it's not the traditional response. …
