… mother who gave birth to you, the father who provides for you and protects you, of course, to them we ought to show a special honor and obedience. Colossians 3.20, Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Any kids here? I'm glad. We have some kids. Kids can come to Sunday evening. It would be a very good thing, one of the absolute best things. I know I'm preaching to the metaphorical choir here that my parents ever did for me, is that they came to Sunday morning and Sunday evening service, and they brought me as well. Children, you think, what can I do? I'm a kid. I have dreams in Him, but what can I do right now? Only eight years old, but I really, really want to please Jesus. That's a good thing. Jesus is working that in your heart. What can you do? The Bible tells us one thing you can do is obey your parents. This pleases the Lord. When you do what your mom and dad tell you to do, children, Jesus gets a big smile. He says, that makes me very happy. He is pleased when we listen to our parents. He is not pleased when we lie to them or cheat or disrespect them or slam the door on them or roll our eyes at them. In fact, in the Old Testament, the punishment for disobeying parents is very serious at the highest level. Cursing your parents, we find in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy was a capital offense, Deuteronomy 21, 18. If a man has a stubborn …
… And then there's tranquility. Colossians chapter 3, verse 20 says, children, obey your parents in everything. For this pleases the Lord. And that's our ultimate goal, to please the Lord. Please the Lord. So all of these things, it's just interesting to me that they're repeated throughout the Bible, from the Old Testament to the New Testament, that we should obey our parents. And that's not always easy to do. No. I would say that, you know, Ed mentioned the Torah. It's all about living honorably. But God gave us in Deuteronomy chapter 6 a very key passage of Scripture for parents. I think about the groups of people that are here in this place today or in Frisco, Dallas, Fort Worth, Lassa Ranch, and you're watching and listening and you're saying, well, I don't have a great relationship with my parents. It's hard for me to honor them. In fact, I would say there's three groups of people here. There's students or children, and you are living under your parents' roof right now. If that's you, lift your hand. Yep. If you live with your parents. …
… You have the responsibility to teach your children to be obedient. That's also in Colossians 3.20, obedient because it's pleasing to the Lord. This is what parenting is. It's not developing their fashion sense. It's not turning them into some kind of highly motivated scholar. It's not making them into some kind of a great athlete. It is to elevate them mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually by training them with the full faculties that you have, confronting the full faculties that they have. And you are all those things. You are mature physically, you're mature mentally, you're mature spiritually, you're mature physically. You're the model, you're the example, you get it, you understand it, and your job is to pass that on to your children. And it starts with teaching them to obey. Hupakuo, from which we get acoustic. It starts with them listening. Teach your children to listen and to submit to what you say. It's a present imperative. Keep on doing this. Keep on obeying. Obey your parents all the time in everything. …
