… But be filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking to yourself in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord. A few little things to understand about that statement. Number one in the Greek, it's a command. So Paul is saying God is commanding you to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Another thing is this word filled means to do it over and over again. So Paul is saying God commends you to be filled again and again and again with the Holy Spirit. Another idea that's communicated in the original language is it's like wind filling your sails. So think of yourself in your little boat floating around. and all of a sudden you get a gust of wind. You need the Holy Spirit to fill your sails. And another way this happens is it speaks of salt permeating meat, which we already talked about. So let's put it all together. God is commanding you to be filled with the Holy Spirit again and again, filling your sails, carrying you along and permeating every level of your life. …
… but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourself in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord. That phrase, be filled, is a command. You're commanded to be filled with the Spirit. Secondly, it's something you should receive again and again. It speaks of a continuous flow of the Spirit into your life. So we need to be praying for this each and every day. So we're in Acts 2. And we're reading about the day of Pentecost. When the Holy Spirit was poured out on the church. They spoke in new languages or tongues. And there were divided flames of fire on their head. Now let me say this. This was a one-off event. It never happened like this again. People were filled with the Spirit again. but not in this particular way. So this was sort of the explosion of the engine, if you will, like when you start your car, that set the early church into motion. We don't need another Pentecost any more than we need another Calvary. Jesus doesn't have to die again and again. He's done that. It's finished. And we don't need another Pentecost. What we need is to appropriate what was unleashed on the day of Pentecost for the power of the Spirit is still here for us today. …
Ephesians chapter 5, verse 15 to 20. I was asked to work on this text, and you'll see why when we get to verse 18 and 19, 20. It's about music, it's about singing, but that's not all there is here. Look carefully, therefore, how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. therefore do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is and do not get drunk with wine for that is debauchery but be filled with the spirit addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ So, Father, I ask now for me and all of us that there would be granted the fullness of the Holy Spirit. this is a great miracle it's a gift and it is a precious thing that we long for now and over and over again in our lives because we want to purchase the time in these evil days don't want anything to be wasted or slip by. …
… walking in the Word, you will be marked by joyful praise, joyful worship, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord, which is what we do when we gather together and what you do on your own all the time as you express the joy of your salvation. So the first is joyful worship. The second response or result of the filling of the Holy Spirit is constant thanksgiving, verse 20, always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father. So the first two verses responding to being filled with the Spirit have to do with our relationship to God. We praise Him with joyful worship. We thank Him in everything with constant thanksgiving to the Father through Christ. Then when you come to verse 21, we move from the Spirit-filled life as it relates to God to the Spirit-filled life as it relates to others. Verse 21, be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. …
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father, and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. Wives, be subject to your own husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she would be holy and blameless. …
… Do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father, and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. What we have in this command is really the key to all Christian living, the key to all Christian living. It's only in keeping this command that we can keep any other commands. Apart from the truth in this command, which is the heart of Paul's message here, Ephesians would be legalistic. Apart from the reality of this command, the work of the Holy Spirit, we would be endeavoring to live the Christian life in the flesh, in the strength of our own will, our own power. And we have been called to a very high standard. Back in chapter 4 and verse 1, remember, we have been called to walk worthy, to walk worthy of the calling to which we are called. …
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord. We've been doing that. We've been doing exactly what verse 19 says, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in our hearts to the Lord. The context of this text is worship, then. Clearly it is worship. Verse 18 is the curious verse that we need to address, and we began to do that last week. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit." What does that have to do with worship? That is the question. And the answer is to understand something of the historical background that Paul was facing in the Roman and Greek world. When Paul contrasts drunkenness with being Spirit-filled, he's contrasting pagan religion with the true worship of God through Jesus Christ. …
… 5, and I want to draw your attention to verses 18 and 19. So open your Bible, if you will, to Ephesians chapter 5, verses 18 and 19. I'm going to read them, and then we're going to talk about these verses for probably a couple of weeks because this is such an important portion of Scripture. Ephesians 5.18 says, "'And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.'" Now, obviously, this is a context of worship. Whatever the filling of the Spirit means, whatever it produces based upon the next verse, it begins with worship. The impact of a Spirit-filled life will show up starting in verse 22 in marriage, in chapter at the beginning of that chapter in family life, and later in chapter 6 even in your public and business life with the world around you. So being filled with the Spirit is a very foundational reality, as we all know. …
… Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. so the first thing he's saying is be careful how you're living you know how a lot of times you wake up and you just start living right you just wake up and you do the same thing right you get up you know i i try to when i remember like the first words out of my mouth i try to just say holy holy holy is the lord god almighty who was and is and is to come because i think about how those angels have been doing that all night while i was sleeping and i just want to join with them because it helps remind me that this is not about me. …
… And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish. …
… Look with me, if you will, beginning in verse 19. Speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord. Now, it's safe to say, if a person is a worshipful person, because that's what we're talking about there. If a person is a worshipful person, that would be an indication that they're submitted to the Spirit of God. That they're filled with the Spirit of God. If a person is not a worshipful person, there's probably an indication that that person is not filled with the Spirit and is not yielding to the Spirit of God. Fair enough? Look at the second one. Verse 20. Always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father. If a person is prayerfully thankful, that would be an indicator that that person is yielding to the Spirit of God. That would be an indicator that that is a Spirit-filled person. If a person is not prayerful And is not thankful Probably an indication that that person Is not filled with the Spirit Last one, now verse 21 And be subject to one another in the fear of Christ Show me a person Who properly submits to the authority That God has placed in their life I'll show you a person who's submitting to the will And the Spirit of God Show me a person that is not respectful Of the authority that God has placed in their life …
