… And this is God's cell. So the verse for today is Exodus 20, verse 12. Honor, everyone say honor. Honor. Honor your father and your mother so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. So this is the commandment that God is giving us. And you just made a statement about culture. This is the backbone of the culture. I believe we have some broken backs in our culture. Some misunderstandings of what honor is, some poor application of honor. A lot of people think, honey, honor is respect. If I just respect you. But that's part of it, but it's not really the full weight, is it? That's right. Now the fact that children are to be commanded is Old Testament to start with, so go back to the book of Proverbs. And let's just hear a few simple statements. Chapter 1, verse 8, hear, my son, your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching. That's a command. Listen to your father and your mother. Chapter 2, My Son, verse 1, if you will receive My words and treasure My commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding. Again a command, My commandments. …
… be going to verse 17. Exodus chapter 20, verse 11 through 17. And it reads this way from the New International Version and a portion of the New Revised Standard Version, beginning with verse 11. We have verse 12 printed, but we're going to start with verse 11. And it reads this way, For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and your mother so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. you shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male or female servants, his ox or donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor. Another translation is don't get jealous of your neighbor. …
