… brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. And now verse 8. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male servant or your female servant or your livestock or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. This is the word of the Lord. Let's pray together. Father, we thank you for this word. We thank you for this night where we are able to reflect on what you have given to us in the Lord's day in the Sabbath. I pray that we would all have teachable hearts to receive by your Spirit what you have for us this night from your word. We thank you for those who wrote the catechism and the helpful emphases it gives us for this day, and I pray that you would help us to receive these and to put them into our hearts, put them into our minds, put them into our practice. What a gift you have given us on the Lord's day to worship, to praise you, to rest from our works. What a gift you have given us to …
… said everybody should be protected from overwork, including immigrants and foreigners who have come in. They shouldn't be overworking either. Now here's the fourth commandment. Exodus 20, verse nine and 10. This is one of the 10 commandments, fourth commandment. You have six days in which to do your work. But the seventh day is to be a day of complete rest, circle that, complete rest dedicated to me. Now this is called the Sabbath. Every seventh day you take a day off. And a Sabbath, you might write this down, Sabbath means a day of rest. That's what it means. And did you know that your heart actually beats different every seven days? We're biologically wired for a day of rest. Now this whole idea of where God says, I want you to have a day of rest and worship, it's not for God's benefit. It's not just some arbitrary law. God did it so you won't burn out. And the reason people are so stressed out today is they've forgotten this in culture after culture after culture after culture. It's for your benefit. Look at this, Mark 2 verse 27, Jesus said the Sabbath was made to benefit man. …
… Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. six days you shall labor and do all your work. The seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord. For in six days, the Lord made the heavens and the earth and he rested on the seventh. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and he hollered it. Now, when you read that God rested on the seventh day. I don't want you to get the idea that God was like pooped. Man, those elephants really took it out of me. Or, you know, working with those insects, you know, just my eyes are tired. It's not that kind of needing a break. It's the idea that he was done. It was enough. It was finished. He had no more to add. He did it all in six days, and it was enough. He could have kept working seven, eight, 10, 12, 145 days. But imagine how full the earth would be had he done that. So he did all that he needed to do in six days. That became the benchmark and the practice going forward. I have a question. Why did God make it a command? Why did God need to make it a command? …
… And the fourth commandment is about getting into God's groove. It's about the rhythm of God. I want see if you can pick it up. Exodus chapter 20, verses 8 through 10. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. I love that because God knew that we have a tendency to forget what we should remember and remember what we should forget. So God says, remember it, okay? Remember the Sabbath day, the Sabbath being rest, a day of worship, a day of refreshment, a day of recalibration. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy, not to make it holy. It already is to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. Did you pick up the rhythm? Let me play it again. I don't think you did. I don't think you did. I can tell you didn't. That's okay. That's okay. God's rhythm. Work six days. One, two, three, four, five, six. …
