… and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Okay, truth number one. God created men and women with equal dignity. Truth number two. God created men and women with different roles. Different roles. Clearly, in so many ways, God created man and woman from the very beginning differently. There's a reason why there's male and female here. There's a reason, multiple reasons actually. While male and female are distinct, they're designed by God to be that way. Genesis 2 is showing us here that it's deeper than just mere anatomy. This is not just biological triviality, accident. This is God creating man for a reason, God creating woman for a reason. both in the image of God, but each with different roles. And God desires to teach us here in Genesis 2 what those roles are if we will listen. If we will listen, we will see that God is giving roles to man and woman that complement one another. …
… Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh. and the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. There's so much here. So I wanna show you four truths about God's design for marriage here and then springing from here all over scripture. Number one, God designs marriage for our good, for the good of humanity. Genesis chapter two, verse 18 jumps off the page in the Bible because over and over again to this point in Genesis chapter one and two, we've read, God saw that what he had made was good. The light was good. The land and the waters were good. Vegetation, plants and trees were good. The sun and the moon were good. Sea creatures and birds were good. Humanity was good. It was all good until it was not good. And it's interesting, not good is actually the first word that God says here in the Hebrew. It's literally, the Lord God said, not good. …

And that slippery snake heard it and went into action. Y'all not going to believe it? I need somebody to write this down. it's gonna blow your mind this time can you imagine that part of the satanic strategy of satan against you is to tattoo you with shame that the enemy is not fully happy until he has you live with embarrassment because he knows that shame is not a part of divine alignment. …
… And they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed." So in Genesis chapter 2, God basically creates a man, and then from that man creates a woman, and inaugurates what Peter calls the grace of life, which is marriage. And marriage in Scripture has a number of purposes. One, companionship, and that's what you see here. Man needed a helper suitable for him. Marriage also has the purpose of procreation. Back in chapter 1, it says, in a broad sense, God created man in His own image and said, be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. So God's design for marriage is companionship and children. In 1 Corinthians 7, we find that God's design for marriage is also moral purity. We are instructed there about the fact that you must marry rather than to burn. That is to say, rather than having unfulfilled natural sexual desires, you need to marry. So it's God's design for moral purity. But I think in the broad sense, marriage is, with all of that being true, also it is a place which is most defined by extensive experiences of love. …
… They shall become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked and not ashamed. marriage by design. Several things we see in this text. The first of which is this, God created marriage. God designed marriage. Marriage was not man's idea. Marriage was God's idea. God is the one who looked at Adam and said, it is not good for him to be alone. I will make him one to come alongside and complete him. I will make him a corresponding part. I will make him whole. Now, let me put a footnote here. Here's what I'm not saying, and here's what the Bible is not saying. The Bible is not saying that any unmarried person is unwhole. There are some individuals, and we see this according to 1 Corinthians 7, that are called and gifted to be single. There are certain individuals whom God has given this ability. Not me, but certain individuals. And if that's you, God bless you. Amen, hallelujah, praise the Lord. Go forth. …
