We are positionally in Christ holy and we are practically being sanctified as we work out our holy identity into holy living. been made and being made right in the same gospel miracle. And that's what's true of you. And that's what's true of me. The way that Peter writes it in his letter, he says, therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. And I want us to think about this. We're going to end on this idea in just a minute. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do. For it is written, be holy because I am holy. That's the standard. That's the goal. That's what we're aiming for. We're aiming for holy lives, for holiness. We are coming to a holy God made holy in Christ to live out our holiness in holy lives. This is what God has in mind. It's the coat, right? Everybody is kind of getting the coat now. Okay, Louie's new coat he got. Yeah. And every time I put it on, I think about Ephesians 4.23, to be made new in the attitude of your minds. …
… to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. We could go to Hebrews 10.10, Hebrews 10.12, Hebrews 10.14, and those passages would say something very similar. So the supper says, it's done. There's only one sacrifice. Christ has paid it all. No more sacrifices needed. And then the other thing that the supper declares, as a catechism points out, is that we are grafted into Christ. His death is our death. His life is our life. And even though he is bodily in heaven, we are united with him by faith and by his Holy Spirit. Well, this is the point at which the catechism then goes on to compare the Lord's Supper and the Roman Catholic Mass. I think you've found as we've been studying the Heidelberg Catechism that the Heidelberg Catechism is a deeply pastoral confession or catechism. the theme of it is comfort it it reminds us in in very personal ways of what christ has done and then we come to question 80 and it's so bold and strong it's it kind of like takes takes off the gloves right it's like put up your dukes let's fight this one out and we might ask the question, why? Why does a catechism sort of change at this point? And here's the answer, I believe. It is to guard the sacredness of the supper and ultimately to guard the gospel. …
… Again and again, he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest, Jesus, had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. And since that time, he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. For by one sacrifice, he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. That scarlet thread that was woven into the garment of the priest who would enter into the Holy of Holies to make the sacrifice on the Day of Atonement on the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant. That same thread that was there and was woven into the tapestries in the tabernacle itself now takes us to the high priest of all high priest, Jesus, who is going to enter into the heavens. And through not that curtain, but by his body is going to make a way for you and I to enter into the very presence of God. God is making a way even in Exodus and even in Leviticus. …
