… and he understands what you are facing. Hebrews 4.16 says, we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses. He was on all points tested as we are, yet without sin. So let us therefore come boldly under the throne of grace and obtain mercy to help in time of need. You know, I've heard people describe a trip to Israel as seeing the Bible actually come to life. Hey, everybody, Greg Laurie. And I've been to Israel many times, and I've led a lot of tours, and I have to say that's absolutely true. Listen, when you're walking on the same stones that Jesus himself walked on, that's something that's enriching to your faith. It's not just a travel experience. It actually energizes and enhances your study of the Bible. Think of it this way. It's a vacation with a purpose. And we're going to be taking a tour of Israel, April 6 to 15, 2027. … and then you see in Christ everything changed Hebrews chapter 4 verse 14 through 16 we have confidence to enter the throne of God confidence to come before God we are not afraid of God in some unhealthy way not afraid of God we are now friends of God friends of God Romans 8 says you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear but you received the spirit of sonship and by him we cry Abba, Father, not afraid, friends of God, welcomed into the presence of God, access to His presence, and we have an inheritance in the Father's kingdom. Inheritance of the Father's kingdom. The Spirit Himself bears witness, Romans 8, 16 and 17. The Spirit Himself bears witness that we are God's children. And if we are children, check this out, we are heirs. Heirs with God and co-heirs with Christ. If indeed we may share in His sufferings, in order that one day we will share in His glory. Oh, brothers and sisters, children of God, be free from the pursuit of pleasures and possessions, plaudits in this world. …
… than Hezekiah had. Let me show it to you in Hebrews 4, verses 15 and 16. He says, For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness, but was in all points tempted as we are yet without sin. Verse 16. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in a time of need. Listen, you don't need to fly and go into some earthly temple. You can go straight into the presence of God. Why? Because of what Christ has done for you. Hezekiah went into a building. You get to go into his presence. And you go straight to him. John Phillips is helpful here. One of my favorite commentators, he says this. He says, in the Old Testament times, the ordinary Israelite could not approach the Holy of Holies where God was enthroned. That is the inner room of the temple. For that was the sole annual prerogative of the high priest, meaning the high priest did it once a year. …
… just as we are, yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Now we get a new picture of Jesus. Matthew tells us that Jesus said that he is gentle and lowly of heart, but Hebrews adds to us and tells us that Jesus is our great high priest. The job of the priest in the Old Testament was to represent the people to God. Jesus came to earth and he lived in human form. He was tempted, the scripture just told us, in every way, but he knew no sin. That means that he can be our high priest. He not only knows all of the things that we carry that are making us feel weary, he is a priest who empathizes with our weaknesses, meaning he actually knows how we feel. And because of his work on the cross, we can look at that last verse again. This has got to be the most beautiful verse in the entire Bible, maybe one of. It says this, look at it, verse 16. …
You have a need, you rush in. Hebrews tells us, come boldly, therefore, before the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. If you are a sinner, if you are estranged from Christ, Come to him. He'll hold up the scepter of grace and welcome you in and forgive you of your sin and accept you as you are. If you are an errant, failing child of God, we all are. Come boldly to the throne of grace. Receive his love. Receive his forgiveness. The scepter is raised. Our king says, come. It is finished on the cross. the veil was torn into, we have access. Let's pray. Father, thank you. Thank you for this incredible story. And though nobody is mentioning Yahweh, nobody is overtly praying, we see the hand of God in the wheels of providence turning for you to preserve your people to save them from this annihilation to preserve them because you had a future plan in redemptive history for them. …
… I will give you rest. Hebrews 4, 16, let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in a time of need. Man, when life just gets ahold of you and you're like, I need grace, I am in a time of need. Go boldly to God. He wants you there in that place. But then what I love is we see in the life of Thomas that he forms you as well. So we leave the world and then we are allowing God to form us, form our hearts, form our minds, form our character, form us through our beliefs and struggles and doubts. If we go back to John chapter 20, verse 25, it says, the other disciples therefore said to him, we have seen the Lord. I mean, that's like a crazy statement. And so he said to them, unless I see his hands and the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of those nails and put my hand into his side. …
… you have been set free from the power of sin and death. According to Hebrews 4.16, you have 24 seven access to God's throne room. You can go there anytime you have a need. According to Romans 8, 33, not even the devil himself can bring a charge against you because God has declared that you're justified. So if the devil can't even bring a charge against you, why are you letting yourself bring charges against you? Satan can't even do that. God has declared that you are justified. It is time that you remember who you are. It is time that you put on your spiritual glasses, is look up from yourself and look at Jesus. Refocus your eyes on Jesus because looking at your sin will not fix it. It will only perpetuate it. Looking at Jesus will. If you say, I'm gonna look off of my sin, I'm not turning a blind eye, I'm just saying my focus is on Jesus, the author and the perfecter of my faith. …
… that formal kind of a manner, just as they came boldly, so we should also approach God. We're told to do that. Hebrews chapter four, verse 16, let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Come boldly is the invitation. And then James puts a fine point on this idea when he says, you have not because you ask not. So ask. So come and come boldly. Oh, I can't come boldly. I'm just, you know, I'm flesh and blood and he's God. Well, he said, come boldly. This is not arrogance. This is confidence. This is not a call to being arrogant. It's a call to being confident. Be confident in God, in his character. It's assurance in the character of God. He invites you to come. You have access to his compassion and strength. You may remember in Luke chapter 18, the chapter begins, Jesus spoke this parable unto them that men ought always to pray and not lose heart. Men ought always to pray and not lose heart. Then he gives this wild analogy of a judge in a town who's a rascal, an unjust judge. And this woman came to the judge for justice and she had an issue and judge didn't want to hear about it because he didn't care. He was a rascal, but she kept coming and kept coming and kept persisting. And finally the judge said, all right, I'll do what you want. Not because I want to do it, but because you keep bugging me. …
… just as we are, yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace in our time of need. God understands you. And then the Jews, back to John 11, then the Jews said, as they see Jesus weeping, they said, see how he loved him? But yet some of them in verse 37 said, could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man just two chapters ago have kept this man from dying? In verse 38, Jesus once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. Take away the stone, he said. When you read this, it's interesting. The word translated deeply moved is not a compassionate term, though we often read it that way because it comes right after Jesus weeping. It's actually a term of like fierce and ferocious anger and fury, which begs the question, what what's Jesus mad at? I don't think it's Martha. I don't think it's Mary. …
… just as we are, yet he did not sin. Here's your shouting verse. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence. somebody shout he's here so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of success our time of blessing our time of wholeness our time of completeness all of that is true too but if you are in the hour of need right now i know a name that is greater than your need i don't care what need you name. Name cancer. Name bankruptcy. Name divorce. Name hatred. Name evil. I know a name that is greater, and when I call it, he answers. High five at least five people say he answers. I turned to the throne, and he answered. God saw humanity striving in our sin, trying to keep the law and couldn't do it, trying to be perfect and couldn't do it, trying to keep the commandments and couldn't do it, so he handled it himself. He's not only a high priest. …
… way just as we are yet he did not sin let us then hello approach God's throne this amazing throne of God. Oh, it says more about the throne. God's throne of, say it, with grace, with confidence, so that we may receive from this throne of grace, mercy, and find grace to help us in our time of need. The very throne of God is grace. Praise God. Grace was the greeting of the early church. They didn't say, hey, how you doing? They said, grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians, Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God to God's holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. And most people probably won't underline the last verse, but if you go to the last verse from chapter 6 of Ephesians, peace to the brothers and sisters and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. …
… To the God who is sovereign, we praise and honor you. With a sincere heart and intentionality, we come with confidence to your throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in the time of need. We will be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, make our requests known, and you, God, will oversee the rest. And because of your promises, we intercede and petition you on behalf of your servant leader, Howard John Wesley. As a son, relative, father, friend, fraternity brother, we retreat your blessings over his personal life as he daily seeks your guidance and heeds your counsel. As a pastor, preacher, teacher, scholar, activist, community leader, mentor, and so much more, we request blessings according to your call upon his life. for his daily communion and heightened intimacy with you. Permit him to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior for his physical and mental well-being, sportsmanship, hobbies, and interests, travels, and the desires of his heart. …
