Jesus: A Priest After the Order of Melchizedek
John Piper, 2026-07-25 · Scripture reading

… So let's go back to chapter 5, verse 9. It goes like this, being made perfect, he, Jesus, became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. That's what we're going to pick up on here in chapter 7. And then it says in verse 11, about this, namely this order of Melchizedek, we have much to say. Oh, does he? And it is hard to explain. Okay, there it is. You don't have to be ashamed. He says it. He wrote it. He says it. However, it seems to be owing to the fact that you've become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food. He became to all who obey Him the source of eternal salvation. So the writer of Hebrews is saying, first of all, as you look at Christ, you understand that He is our substitute, and He is our sovereign. He is the author of our salvation, the pioneer of the trailblazer, the one who leads us to God. Thirdly, the writer wants us to understand that He is our sanctifier. Look at verse 11, for both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father. He is the one who makes us holy. He is the one who makes us righteous. Christ is the sanctifier. We are the sanctified. Hagiadzo, to make holy, to hallow. And again, over in the tenth chapter of Hebrews, verse 10 and verse 14 help with this. By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. …

Pride: The Sin Most Hated by God
Francis Chan, 2017-05-28

As I was telling him about my battle with pride. It's Ephesians, I'm sorry, Hebrews 5, verses 8 and 9. Talking about Jesus. Actually, I'll back up to 7. Hebrews 5, 7 through 9. Listen to this. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death. And he was heard because of his reverence. although he was a son he learned obedience through what he suffered and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him Did you guys catch that? This is Jesus. Jesus in the flesh. In the days of his flesh. Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death. And he was heard because of his reverence. That verse is awesome. Picture God in the flesh. Jesus screaming out to the Father, crying out to the Father, and the Bible says the Father heard him because of his reverence. …
