The Way Of Wisdom Is Speaking To You
Jack Hibbs, 2026-05-10

… But this is where he made the mistake. Isaiah chapter 11, verse 1 and 2. There shall come forth a rod, capital L. See that? It means we're speaking about somebody. from the stem of Jesse. You guys know who Jesse is. And a branch, the branch and the rod are the same one, shall grow out of his roots, Jesse's roots. Verse 2. The spirit, can you look at the screen in my finger? The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him. The spirit of wisdom, understanding, spirit of counsel, might. the spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord. Watch, this is important. Of course, it's referencing Jesus. Who is the branch? We know this from the Bible. Jesus is the branch. Isaiah is speaking. If you don't know, 743 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, God is speaking through Isaiah, the great prophet of Israel, and he's announcing that the Messiah is also named the branch and the rod. and upon the Messiah, the manifest seven spirits of God will be upon him, but the spirits are these. …

The Small Beginnings of Great Things
Skip Heitzig, 2026-03-29

… shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him. The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord. So this is a confirmation. It's not just a confirmation. It is a Trinitarian confirmation, a Trinitarian confirmation. All three persons of the Godhead are present. The son is being baptized. The spirit is descending as a dove, and the father is speaking. The Trinity shows up at the very beginning of Jesus' ministry. now i will admit to you the most difficult subject in all of christian theology is the triune nature of god it is the great mystery of our faith and because it is we must never try to trivialize the triune nature of god by reducing the trinity to a formula i know we try to do that to explain it to people especially to our kids it's sort of like an apple you got the flesh and the skin and the core. It's like an egg. You got the yolk and the shell and the white. …

The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermon
Robert Barron, 2025-12-06 · Scripture reading

… and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him. So Isaiah is anticipating the Messiah, the Mashiach, the anointed one, that will come from the line of David. And he'll have these gifts, namely, a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, the spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord. This is the root of this great tradition, which comes up now from the Bible into the fathers and through the great theologians. Think Gregory the Great, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, all of them speculate upon these gifts of the Holy Spirit. And you want to trace it even further, come up to the last confirmation homily I gave, which would have been just a few weeks ago as we record these words. And I talked to the kids about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Because we say at confirmation, when they are confirmed with the presence of the Spirit, I always tell them the Spirit never comes empty-handed, but he comes bearing gifts. …

… And from the seven spirits who are before His throne, sevenfold Holy Spirit, that's borrowed from Isaiah chapter 11 verse 2 where you have seven distinguishing characteristics of the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit in all His fullness." And again, that's another seven. So the validation of this book comes from God the Father, and it comes from the Holy Spirit. And then we read, and verse 5, from Jesus Christ. God the Father and God the Spirit send us grace and peace and the validation of this divine revelation. And then John moves to Jesus Christ, the One who is the theme of the book. And with that, He launches into magnificent description of the Lord Jesus Christ, glorious description. The faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, the ruler of the kings of the earth, to Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood, and He has made us to be a kingdom of...to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father. He lays out all these magnificent characteristics of Christ. …

… A shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. He will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what his eyes see, nor make a decision by what his ears hear, nothing superficial, but with righteousness He will judge the poor and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth." You don't need to worry about that. He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. And righteousness will be the belt about His loins, and faithfulness the belt about His waist. Isaiah gives a lot of other wonderful aspects of the kingdom we don't have time to look over, but we know that when the king comes, every knee will bow to him. …
