Sermons on Isaiah 40:17

All the nations are as nothing before Him; He regards them as nothingness and emptiness. All the nations are like nothing before him. They are regarded by him as less than nothing, and vanity. All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing, and vanity.

What Kind Of God Do You Believe In?
David Platt, 2026-04-22

… unshakable power. And Isaiah says, he puts it this way, behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket. All the nations are as nothing before him. They are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness. Now remember, we've talked about this before. I brought out this bucket again. I've used it as an illustration one other time. There's a bucket with water in it. I got a dropper. So I'm going to get a drop of water and I just want you when you think about all the headlines and all the nations of the world and all their military might, I want to make sure you have a right perspective of what you're reading because I want to show you a picture of the nations before our God. Second, it is the thing you hope for. And third, it is the ground or basis of your hope. All three of those are called hope. For example, you say to the coach of the timber wolves, what are you hoping for in this game or how are your players feeling about this game and he says they're full of hope they're full of hope we're going to win this game that's the feeling inside and then you say to him what are you hoping for and he says victory victory is our hope. …

The Book of Isaiah (Part 2)
Francis Chan, 2017-05-02

… that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the Lord. Isaiah 40 verse 17 All the nations are as nothing before him. They are counted by him as less than nothing and emptiness. To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness compare with him? Verse 23 who brings princes to nothing and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. Isaiah 44, verses 6 through 8. Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, and His Redeemer, the Lord of hosts, I am the first and I am the last. Besides me, there is no God. Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid. Have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses. Is there a God besides me? There is no rock. I know not any. …
