Sermons on Isaiah 53:12

Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors. Therefore I will give him a portion with the great. He will divide the plunder with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was counted with the transgressors; yet he bore the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors: yet he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Alistair Begg, 2026-09-12

… By his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong. Because he poured out his life unto death and was numbered with the transgressors, for he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors." Ultimately, all of these questions must be brought to the foot of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. For in the cross, God comes and deals with it all and enters into our suffering and pours out his blood, dying for those who hate him and revile him, and in his death, praying for his enemies. and all the moral and intellectual dilemma that is folded into Habakkuk's complaints is ultimately only resolved.

But he didn't say a word. That all happened. he was led out like a lamb to be slaughtered he was condemned to death without fair judgment and then he was put to death for the transgressions of everyone else that's us he died like a criminal but then was buried with the rich even though he'd done nothing wrong and had never lied you know this is true Jesus died on the cross as a criminal you know that was the worst capital punishment available. It's humiliating, death on the cross. But when they took him down, there was a wealthy man named Joseph of Arimathea who had a brand new tomb he'd bought for his family. He often buried people in the same tomb for decades. There was like a hole in the wall of a cave, and then he covered it up. And Joseph of Arimathea was quite wealthy, but he offered his tomb for Jesus. He goes, you're not going to need it very long. …

… Now you better arm up and care lots of money. I don't think so. So what does he do to clarify what's going on? He quotes Isaiah 53 12 in verse 37, just a piece of it. He was numbered with the transgressors. Here's the whole verse. He poured out his soul, this is Isaiah 53 12, whole verse from which he pulls this phrase. He poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors. Yet he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors. And he quotes, Luke adds this word at the beginning of verse 37, that must happen. This is a divine decree. This is going to happen to my son. And then the certainty is underlined at the end of the verse. What is written about me has its fulfillment. My time to die. is here. I mean, you've got to feel the tension of this moment if you just accumulate what's been said so far, right? Judas has already now made a pact with the chief priests to hand him over. …
