College Is for (Lasting) Pleasure
David Mathis, 2026-09-26

… God speaks through Isaiah and says, Come, come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. And you who have no money, come buy and eat. Come buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money on that which is not bread and your labor on that which doesn't satisfy? Listen diligently to me and eat what is good and delight yourself in rich food. Do you know what good news it is that the living God would talk like that? that he would say, you're thirsty, and that's good, because I want to give you fresh, cold water, and you're hungry, that's good. I want to give you a feast for your joy in me. The God who made you doesn't drop in and say, hey, what are you sinners doing? Desiring. Thirsting. Stop your thirsting. Stop your hungering. No, he comes and says, be hungry, be thirsty. I made you like that. I made your soul to be hungry for me. I made your soul to thirst for me that I might satisfy it. …

David’s God-Entranced Song: Know It, Feel It, Say It, Sing It
John Piper, 2026-06-13 · Scripture reading

Would you pray with me? Oh, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. You who have no money, come buy and eat. Come buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and labor for that which does not satisfy. Listen diligently to me and eat what is good. Delight yourselves in rich food. Come and hear that your soul may live and I will make with you an everlasting covenant my steadfast, sure love for David. God, I pray that the effect of this moment and the closing of this conference would be that these pastors would know and feel afresh that they are stunningly beneficiaries of the covenant made with David. And all the blessings that David reveled in are theirs. and so they may they go out with a sense of my rock will hold and carry on for another 10 or 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 years. So do that work and more, I pray, in Jesus' name. …

… and he would say to us, he would say, Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. And you who have no money, come buy and eat. Come buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently and come to me, he says, and delight yourselves in rich food. And so we might say, with the help of the Holy Spirit, yes, I want to eat like that spiritually. I want to drink like that spiritually. But how do I eat Jesus? How do I drink Jesus? How do I enjoy Jesus? And so, we as Christians sometimes talk about the spiritual disciplines. It's not my favorite term. I would rather have the S be capital, Holy Spirit, spiritual, and sometimes disciplines. I feel like the language falls on me, first and foremost. What am I going to do? Rather, I like talking about habits of grace. The grace comes first. …

The True Bread From Heaven - Grant Partrick
Grant Partrick, 2025-12-22

This is what the prophet Isaiah is saying in Isaiah 55. Come, all who are thirsty, come to the waters, and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Look what he says. Why spend money on what is not bread and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, he says. Listen to me pleading with the people and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest affair. Give ear and come to me. Listen that you may live. And then a few verses down he says, seek the Lord while he may be found. Call on him while he is near. Augustine said, you have made us for yourself, oh Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find rest in you. And there's somebody in every single room, probably on every single row today at our church, Thank you. and you're laboring for food that spoils and wondering why you're more hungry today than you were yesterday. …

Enjoy Him: The Call to Commune with Jesus
David Mathis, 2025-11-08 · Scripture reading

… He's speaking God's voice here like a street vendor. Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. And you who have no money, come buy and eat. Come buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money on that which is not bread and your labor on that which does not satisfy? but listen diligently and come to me and delight yourself in rich food. Isn't that amazing? That the God of the universe would stoop to play street vendor and that when he does, he would appeal to your thirst and say, I wanna satisfy your thirst. I gave you thirst so that I, the living God, would satisfy your thirst. I made you hungry, not just with a physical appetite, but with a soul hunger that I might feed you with the bread of life. I couldn't help but hear that. In some of these testimonies, as you would say, you had talked to somebody and they're basically talking about their spiritual thirst without using that language. I'm thirsty. I'm looking for something. I'm hungry. My soul is hungry. And the living God in Isaiah 55 says, I made you like that for me. I put that hunger in your soul, that thirst in your soul for me. And so you may say, hey, that's great. I want it. …
