What Job Teaches Us about Ourselves, Part 3
Chuck Swindoll, 2026-10-01

… Well, the friends show up. You may recall, verse 11, three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, and they came, each one, from his own place. They made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and comfort him. And when they lifted up their eyes at a distance, they did not recognize him. They raised their voices and wept. And each of them tore his robe and threw dust over their heads toward the sky. And they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw his pain was very great. Fifth lesson. Caring and sensitive friends know when to come. how to stay quiet, and what to say. Caring and sensitive friends know when to come, how to stay quiet, and what to say. … with the intent to bring him comfort and sympathy. Check Job 2.11. That's why they left to come to Job. They were friends. About his age, maybe a little older, maybe one or two younger, but his contemporaries came leaving home and going to the trouble of traveling to the city dump of Uz, the town where Job lived. and they sat in silence staring at him, trying to believe it was the same man that they had seen in their previous reunion, because now he was swollen and dirty and broken, and his head was shaved. and then their worst mistake of all they started to talk to him and they unloaded the truck. They judged him. They shamed him. They blamed him. One cruel statement after another with graceless, blunt words. They humiliated him. And the book... includes it all. I'm simple enough to think that Job probably kept a journal or his wife did. Who could have remembered such philosophical meanderings as filled the poetical part of the book? …

… REPUTATION. LOOK IN CHAPTER TWO NOW AND, AND BEGIN TO LOOK IN VERSE 11, AND NOW WHEN JOB'S THREE FRIENDS HEARD OF ALL THIS EVIL THAT WAS COME UPON HIM, THEY CAME EVERYONE FROM HIS OWN PLACE, ELIPHAZ, THE TEMONITE, AND BILLDAD, THE SHUHITE, AND ZOPHAR, THE NEAMETHITE, FOR THEY HAD MADE AN APPOINTMENT TOGETHER TO COME TO MOURN WITH HIM AND TO COMFORT HIM. HENCE WE GET THE PHRASE, JOB'S THREE COMFORTERS. NOW HERE THESE THREE GUYS HAVE COME, AND THEY COME IN AND THEY JUST SIT DOWN AND THEY LOOK AT JOB AND THEY BEGIN TO PHILOSOPHIZE. JOB, YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING WRONG, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT YOU, NO MAN COULD SUFFER THE CALAMITY THAT YOU'VE SUFFERED, JOB, UNLESS HE'D DONE SOMETHING VERY, VERY, VERY BAD. NOW JOB, WHY DON'T YOU QUIT BEING A HYPOCRITE? JOB, WHY DON'T YOU QUIT PROTESTING YOUR INNOCENCE? WHY DON'T YOU FESS UP, JOB? WHY DON'T YOU JUST LET US KNOW THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE THINGS THAT YOU HAVE DONE, BECAUSE IF YOU'RE RIGHT WITH GOD, YOU CAN'T BE SICK. IF YOU'RE RIGHT WITH GOD, YOU CAN'T LOSE YOUR JOB. IF YOU'RE RIGHT WITH GOD, YOU WON'T KNOW SICKNESS AND SORRY. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THAT LIE? FOLKS, THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE TELLING THAT LIE ON TELEVISION, THESE JOY BOYS TODAY ON TELEVISION, AND THEY'LL GET ON THERE AND TELL YOU, IF YOU JUST GET RIGHT WITH GOD, AH, YOU'LL HAVE THE KEY TO FORT …
