… Then Martha says something remarkable here. It says, but I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask. If only, if only you'd have shown up. But I know my confidence, my trust, my faith is that you hear from your Father and that you are the one who came to do and to work and to fulfill the life that runs through you. And I think that there's this wrestle, and I think that sometimes we think that the wrestling with God, it can be a sign of our faith failing. But it's often a sign that our faith is becoming more honest, more intimate, more mature. It's saying, God, because I'm walking through different seasons with you, and I have dialogue with you, I have communication with you, and time and time again, just like Martha says, but I still believe because she's seen. Remember in the first part of the passage, we reference who Martha is, was from an earlier portion of scripture. She has presence, and she's got relationship in the Gospels. …

Whoever believes in me, even if he dies will live. And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? She said, Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world. When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is here and is asking for you. As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly and went to him. For Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still where Martha had met him. So when the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, presuming that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became perturbed and deeply troubled and said, where have you laid …

I don't think Martha was thinking that Lazarus was coming out of the tomb, because later when Jesus says, move the stone, she says, you don't want to move the stone, he's been in there four days, there's going to be an odor. But she knows that Jesus is a miracle man. He didn't make it to town in time to do the miracle, but she knows he's a miracle man. And I know that even now, God will give you whatever you ask. And Jesus said to her, talk about Easter. Your brother will rise again. And Martha answered, I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. …
