The one who believes in me will live even though they die and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this? Yes, Lord, she replied. I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God who is to come into the world. After she said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. The teacher is here, she said, and is asking for you. When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with the perfumed oil and dried his feet with her hair. It was her brother, Lazarus, who was ill. So the sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, Master, the one you love is ill. When Jesus heard this, he said, Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this, he said to his disciples, Let us go back to Judea. The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of the world. But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. …

… have come, my brother would still be alive. And Jesus responds back to her, your brother will rise again. And in verse 24, Martha answers, I know, I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. She's going, I know, I've read the stories, I've been to church before, I know at the resurrection of the last day, I know somewhere down in the distant future, I'm going to see my brother again at the resurrection of the last day. I know that somewhere way down there, that's going to happen, but that's a long time from now. And I miss them now. And Jesus responds back to her and says, these words, this is our story. If everybody leaves memorizing these words, you will overflow with hope this week. I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even though they die. And whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this. Jesus is going, it's not too late. I'm never too late. I don't know how to be late. …

I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even though they die. And whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this? And she did believe it, but her answer was interesting. She didn't say, yes, I believe that whoever believes in you will live even though they die. She said, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God who's come into the world. There had been a promise among the Jews for centuries that God was gonna send a savior, a redeemer, a Messiah to save the people. …

… the dead is because of what she says next. Martha said to Him, I know that He will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Yes, Lord, I believe in the future resurrection, and I know that at some point my brother will rise again. Now, remember, not everybody in Israel believed in the future resurrection. The Pharisees did, but the Sadducees didn't, for example, among the leaders of the Jewish people. But Martha did believe in the future resurrection. And it's on this occasion and in that moment that Jesus pronounces the I Am, where she says to Him, I know He will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus does not say, I will be the one who will raise Him in the last day. What He does say is, I am the resurrection and the life.
