The Work In The Wait | Julia Veach

… got a lot going on. We've got grieving Mary and questioning Martha, and now we've got an audience of people too. And there's a lot of different feelings, responses. So when Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. Where have you laid him, he asked. Come and see, Lord, they replied. And then we get to the shortest scripture in the whole book of the Bible, Jesus wept. Okay, now we have seen Jesus say, no, I'm going to wait two more days. He answers Martha's question. He double downs that he's resurrection life. He prophesies not only the miracle he's about to do, but he talks about how he is going to give all glory to his father. There is so much confidence in the outcome of this story. And still Jesus weeps. And still he knows the outcome. He's promised the outcome. He's talked about the finished work. He's doubled down on who he is in this story. …

Mike Schmitz, 2026-03-21 · Scripture reading

… When Jesus arrived he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem only about two miles away and many of the Jews who had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. But Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have died. But even now, I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise. Martha said to him, I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day. Jesus told her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even if he dies will live. And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? She said, Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world. When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is here and is asking for you. As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly and went to him. For Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still where Martha had met him. So when the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, presuming that she was going to the tomb to weep …

… Silencio, por favor. the Bible says, put on the screen, when Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and he was troubled. Where have you laid him? Come and see, Lord. They replied, and Jesus wept. and he wept he's there with Lazarus and Mary and Martha and he's weeping I never understood the gravity of this scripture because when I was growing up my dad was like you need to memorize scripture so I committed to memory John 11 35 Jesus wept first verse I ever memorized two words Jesus wept but I didn't understand the power of this moment Jesus is showing up to tell all of us who he is I bring my presence before I bring my power. I would rather weep with you first and then heal with you. and I want to say that if Jesus wept then he still weeps today Jesus weeps over your pain he weeps over your brokenness he weeps over your trauma if it breaks your heart it breaks his heart anybody thankful today that we serve the God of compassion and the God of grace the God that would show up and weep with you religious people just want Jesus to show up with power but Jesus followers would rather have his presence over his power I'd rather have him be with me than do things for me I'd rather have him care about me than just be a genie in a bottle …

Is God Dishonored When We Grieve?
David Mathis, 2026-01-17

… when Jesus saw Mary weeping and the Jews who had come with her also weeping he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled and he said where have you laid him they said to him Lord come and see Jesus wept. So the Jews said, see how he loved him, which is a really good observation. You see love in grief. When you really love someone, you grieve their loss. What you grieve reveals what and whom you love. but Jesus didn't only feel our sorrows when he was among us Isaiah also says he carried them he bore our sorrows he bore our griefs and carried our sorrows yet we esteemed him stricken smitten by God and afflicted but he was pierced for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities. Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace. And by his wounds, we are healed. and because of Jesus's work on our behalf carrying our sorrows bearing our griefs a day is coming where there will be no more sorrows every tear will be wiped away death shall be no more nor shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore here's the way Isaiah talks about it all the way back 700 years before Jesus he says the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing everlasting joy shall be upon their heads they shall obtain joy and gladness and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. …

I want you to see the scene this is a real place and a real event this really happened one sister comes home whispers into the other sister's ear the teacher's here she gets up quickly and runs out to the edge of town to meet Jesus and it says when she sees him she just collapses at his feet Mary if you know anything about her she loved to be at Jesus's feet though she would have preferred different circumstances for sure the heaviness of the heartache was too much to stand and she collapsed at his feet and she says the same words as her sister if you would have been here my brother would not have died verse 35 is the shortest verse in the bible if you are a kid and have to memorize bible verses that's the one you hope to get but while it's the shortest I think it may be one of the most powerful verses in the whole bible a little over a week and a half ago I shared this verse in this room as we celebrated the life of my friend 31 year old 31 years old after a five-year battle with brain cancer he ultimately defeated brain cancer and went home to be with Jesus just …
