… that she had seen the Lord and that he had spoken these things to her. She went and told them exactly what he said. Then the same day at evening, beginning the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where their disciples were assembled for the fear of the Jews, the disciples are hiding. They're afraid that what happened to Jesus is going to happen to them. Jesus came and stood in the mist and said to them, Peace be with you. They're in a shut room, afraid of what's going to happen. And Jesus shows up. And when he said this, he showed them his hands and his sides. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, peace to you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. …
… locked in the house because they were scared that maybe they were going to get crushed like he did on the cross. On the evening of the first day of the week, when the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, peace be with you. That's what you say when you walk through a wall. and after this he showed them his hands and sighed the disciples were overjoyed when they saw there it is saw they saw the lord again jesus said peace with you peace be with you peace peace peace to you and then listen to what he said as the father has sent me i am sending you Jesus is not here today talking theoretically to you He's talking to you as someone who was sent and who got the message I gotta go and he knew the plan he knew the cross was at the end of the mission And he said, Here am I. …
… newness out of our nightmare I love the text the text shouts me because it says it's it's it's on the first day, the first day, okay, you didn't shout. First day of the week, it's a new week. I've already told you about the nightmare of the past few days, but out of that nightmare, there is newness. Man, I did a fresh reading of Henry Brown a couple of weeks ago, about a month ago Henry Brown and it just broke my heart because Henry Brown uh paid for his wife and three kids his pregnant wife and three kids not to be sold further south into enslavement and he was promised that they would not be sold and yet the crooked slave owner sold him anyhow he was traumatized he was messed up devastated heartbroken because it became a nightmare please don't miss this his wife is pregnant he has three kids by her they have a beautiful family he pays he works hard to come up with money to pay to ensure that they will not get sold away from him and the slave master did it anyhow how trifling what a betrayal how low down that was the slave master did it anyhow I parked right there because that's where somebody is you know the nightmare of betrayal the disciples in our text they've experienced a nightmare a nightmare when the worst that could happen actually does happen. I'm talking to somebody right now in church. You love the Lord, …
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. May you have a seat. so if you remember um so if you remember there uh the second sunday of easter was the divine mercy sunday and on that sunday we heard this exact gospel we heard the gospel of how jesus had given the holy spirit to the apostles to be able to forgive sins retain sins and so the invitation or the uh yeah invitation to make a commitment to go to confession every two to four weeks as we go through the Easter season, as we go into summer, was kind of put out there. I put that out there. And so hopefully in the last seven or so weeks, you've been to confession a couple times. But here's the thing. That's not to make you feel guilty if you haven't gone. But it is, A, a reminder. And B, there's something about when we go to confession, what do we confess? Oftentimes we confess our sins, but also we confess the near occasion of sin. And so maybe you've heard that phrase before, the near occasion of sin. So what is the near occasion of sin? It's Basically, what are those people, places, and things that they're not of themselves? …
… Because Jesus said so. In John chapter 21, Jesus is making those men the first priests and saying, no, you actually have my power. You have my ability to bring mercy to the world, to forgive sins. If you don't, they're retained. If you do, they're gone. That's why I'm going to say that today, your next confession is the exercise that your soul and my soul needs. that your next confession is the exercise that your soul and my soul needs. And I mean this for everyone. From the person who is convinced that they're beyond God's reach to the person who is absolutely convinced they're a genuinely, quote unquote, good person. Because that's maybe a lot of us. We're like, no, but I'm okay. Like, why would I have to go to confession? Like, I go to mass. Like, I help. Like, if you're back at your parish. Like, at Easter, I was back home for Easter and like, they knew I was there. So like, hey, get back up, you know. …
… So listen now. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst. He said to them, Peace be with you. when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Now, there you see it. There's the juxtaposition. The risen Jesus invariably shows his wounds and offers peace together. Now, why the showing of the wounds? The wounds are the sign of our sin. It's very important now. We don't just rush to the joy of the resurrection, but we see it's precisely the crucified Jesus who is risen from the dead. Why does he bear wounds? Because we killed him. I've said to you before, in all the passion narratives, it's as though the whole world is conspiring against him. It's as though the sin of the world, cruelty, hatred, violence, treachery, betrayal, injustice, you know, all of it, all of it comes out to meet him. …
… Okay, so we'll have those two chapters open. now the 11 remaining disciples are here in verse 19 the same day at evening being the first day of the week the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the jews jesus came and stood in their midst. And he said to them, peace be with you. When he said this, he showed his hands, them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So they weren't glad when they first saw him because they didn't know who he was. They were terrified. First of all, they're hiding because they're afraid they're going to be killed by the Jews. They're hiding. And then somebody walks through the wall. it doesn't it doesn't help the issues of fear you know when somebody just appears through the wall and that's what happened and so they they aren't having it there you can imagine i mean you can imagine they are they were terrified already now they're terrified terrified on steroids i mean they are terrified and so jesus shows his hands on his side they realize who he is because remember when Jesus appears over and over and over again, he appears as other, constantly, differently. …
