… and life-changing truth let's go Grab your Bibles and go with me to John chapter 4 verses 27 through 34. Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus. John chapter 4 verses 27 through 34. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this passage of scripture, at this time in the text, Jesus has gone into Samaria. It's kind of a big deal. because Jesus as a Jew would have typically under standard sociocultural rules no dealings with the Samaritans. The Samaritans were considered half Jews. They worshipped at a different mountain. They were less than in the mindsets and mentalities of most Jews. And yet earlier in verse 4, Jesus says, I must go through Samaria. And the text tells us that when he gets to this well at Samaria, that he is wearied from the journey because Samaria was out of the way for where he was ultimately headed. But he had something to do in Samaria. So he goes to this well where he has an encounter with a woman at a strange hour. …
… And listen to what Jesus said right after that. he said to them, my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. So what is that? What is the will of the one who sent Jesus? What is Jesus's food? What's the work that he's called to accomplish? Well, you fast forward in the book of John to Jesus' prayer right before he goes to the cross. And he says, Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you since you have given him authority over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life. They may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth having accomplished the work you gave me to do. So what's the work that the Father gave the Son to do? To give eternal life. And what's eternal life? This is eternal life, that they may know God and Jesus Christ. …
… So the disciples said to one another, Could someone have brought him something to eat? Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to finish his work. Do you not say, In four months the harvest will be here? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest. The reaper is already receiving payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. For here is the saying is verified that one sows and another reaps. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work. Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, he told me everything I have done. When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them, and he stayed there for two days. Many more began to believe in him because of his word. And they said to the woman, We no longer believe because of your word, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world. The Gospel of the Lord. …
… It should be an amen to that. for I've come down from heaven not to do my will, but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me that I shall lose none of all those who he has given to me, but raise them up on the last day. This is our hope for my father's will is that everyone who looks to the son and believes in him shall have eternal life and will, and I will raise them up on the last day. And at this, the Jews began to grumble. I don't think they began. I think they just continued to grumble about him saying, this guy keeps saying he's the bread that came down from heaven. Isn't this Jesus, son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can you say I've come down from heaven? They're going, this is Jesus? He's saying he's not from heaven, he's from Nazareth. And Jesus says, stop grumbling among yourself. No one can come to me unless the father who sent me draws them and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard the father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the father except the one who was from God. Only he has seen the father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness …
… And it was the one thriving reality in His life that is summed up in what He said in John 4.34, My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and finish His work. And that's got to be your life. Walk in wisdom. That's your priority. Make the most of your opportunity, and fill your life with what is His will, and finish His work. Come to the end, you can say with Paul, I finished the course. I've kept the faith. Let's pray together. Lord, sometimes we can get caught up in making things more complicated than they need to be, and an experience like this portion of Scripture takes all the complexity out of it and reduces us down to something we can grasp and understand. And wonderfully and gratefully, we are in awe of the fact that You have not asked us to do what we cannot do, but You have only asked us to do what we can do. And we have literally the capability to live wisely, because we have been given the wisdom that is from above, the wisdom of the gospel, the wisdom of the Son of God, the wisdom of the Spirit of God, the wisdom of the Scripture. …
