He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.

… and the love that we take to others that come our way. In Luke chapter 10, verse 27, we see in verse 29 that Jesus was giving this account of the parable that we call the Good Samaritan. He says, and who is my neighbor? and then he begins to walk the people down the path that there was a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and he fell among robbers who stripped him and beat him and departed leaving him half dead. There he was on the side of the road. I remember on the Jericho road when we visited there on two occasions. The road is very narrow and there's only room for really two people. But there's a lot of places, rocks and hills where you can hide. And the story is told here that as this man was walking down to Jericho from Jerusalem, he was attacked by thieves and robbers and he was left half dead. and so we're told that as he was laying there that a priest was going down that road and when he saw him he passed on the other side now that's a very small road and here was a priest a man who represented the God of the covenant he passed by him. …
… And he said, well, I think, and the guy answers well. He says, love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind. And because we know Jesus taught us this, love your neighbor as yourself. Now, Jesus had answered the question when it was posed to him. What's the greatest commandment? This is what he said. Love God. That's the greatest commandment. Oh, and there's a second commandment like it. Love your neighbor as yourself. On these commandments, all the law and all the prophets, everything that has been revealed to us, all of it hinges on these things. Love God, love your neighbor. And so Jesus says, you've answered correctly. But then the guy, verse 29, wanted to justify himself. So he asked Jesus, and who is my neighbor? Now, can you see yourself in this setting? We ask God a question. He gives us an answer. We try to get him to slice it up a little bit thinner. …
How do you read it? He answered, love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength and with all your mind. And love your neighbor as yourself. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. Do this and you will live. But he wanted to justify himself. So he asked Jesus, and who is my neighbor? That's an interesting reply. Who is my neighbor? Do you think that the expert in the law had a neighbor he didn't like? Do you have any hard-to-get-along-with neighbor stories? I've had a few neighbors who bug me over the years. Neighbor issues abound. Countries fight with countries. People like us dislike people like them. Politicians bicker, coworkers quarrel, and family members squabble. We've got neighbor issues. Why? Because like the expert in the law in Luke 10, who was trying to justify himself and prove that he was an all-around very good guy, we are, in truth, fallen, flawed, and frail people. We have problems with each other. …
… what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, what is written in the law? What is your reading of it? So he answered and said, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself. And Jesus said to him, you've answered rightly, do this and you will live. But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, and who is my neighbor exactly? Then Jesus answered and said, a certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him what? Half dead. Now by chance, a certain priest came down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise, a Levite, which I hate that they got to go ahead and tarnish my name like that. A Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked and passed by on the other side. …
… What do you read there? The lawyer answered, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself. And Jesus said to him, you have given the right answer. Do this and you will live. But wanting to justify himself, the lawyer asked Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him for half dead. Now, by chance, a priest was going down that road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So likewise, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, while traveling down the road, came near him, and when he saw the man, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. …
