Luke 24

1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they and some others came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came unto the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. They entered in, and didn’t find the Lord Jesus’ body. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were puzzling over this, suddenly two men in radiant apparel stood beside them. While they were greatly perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:And it came to pass, while they were perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel: 5As the women bowed their faces to the ground in terror, the two men asked them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. The men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?and as they were affrighted and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you while He was still in Galilee:He isn’t here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee,He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, 7‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’”saying that the Son of Man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and the third day rise again?”Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.saying that the Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8Then they remembered His words. They remembered his words,And they remembered his words,And they remembered his words, 9And when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.and returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest. 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. Now they were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. The other women with them told these things to the apostles. It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James: and the other women with them told these things unto the apostles. 11But their words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. These words seemed to them to be nonsense, and they didn’t believe them. And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.And these words appeared in their sight as idle talk; and they disbelieved them. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. And after bending down and seeing only the linen cloths, he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he departed to his home, wondering what had happened. Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. But Peter arose, and ran unto the tomb; and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths by themselves; and he departed to his home, wondering at that which was come to pass. 13That same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.Behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened. 15And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them. While they talked and questioned together, Jesus himself came near, and went with them. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with sadness on their faces. He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?And he said unto them, What communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad. 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things which have happened there in these days?”And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19“What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people. He said to them, “What things?” They said to him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20Our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and they crucified Him.and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21But we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since these things took place. But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. But we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass. 22Furthermore, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb;Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb; 23but they did not find His body. They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive.and when they didn’t find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described. But Him they did not see.”Some of us went to the tomb and found it just like the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.And certain of them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. 25Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! He said to them, “Foolish people, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter His glory?”Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?”Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory? 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 28As they approached the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther. They came near to the village where they were going, and he acted like he would go further. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further. 29But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over.” He went in to stay with them. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them. 30While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them. When he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave it to them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread and blessed; and breaking it he gave to them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight.Their eyes were opened and they recognized him; then he vanished out of their sight. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? And they said one to another, Was not our heart burning within us, while he spake to us in the way, while he opened to us the scriptures? 33And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, gathered togetherThey rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,And they rose up that very hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, 34and saying, “The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!”saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. 35Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And they rehearsed the things that happened in the way, and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread. 36While they were describing these events, Jesus Himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”As they said these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be to you.”And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 37But they were startled and frightened, thinking they had seen a spirit. But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit. 38“Why are you troubled,” Jesus asked, “and why do doubts arise in your hearts? He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts? And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do questionings arise in your heart? 39Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself. Touch Me and see—for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye behold me having. 40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41While they were still in disbelief because of their joy and amazement, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”While they still didn’t believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat? 42So they gave Him a piece of broiled fish,They gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish. 43and He took it and ate it in front of them.He took them, and ate in front of them. And he took it, and did eat before them. And he took it, and ate before them. 44Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.”He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms concerning me must be fulfilled.”And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.And he said unto them, These are my words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me. 45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures; 46And He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:and he said unto them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day; 47and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. You are witnesses of these things. And ye are witnesses of these things.Ye are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”Behold, I send out the promise of my Father on you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.”And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high. 50When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them.He led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands and blessed them. And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And he led them out until they were over against Bethany: and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven. While he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. 52And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,They worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53praising God continually in the temple.and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.and were continually in the temple, blessing God.
