… But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, he came to where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. he sold a man. He went to him. He bound up his wounds. He poured on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal. He took him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day, the good Samaritan took out some money and gave it to the innkeeper. He says, I will repay you when I come back. And so here was the man who was left to die, neglected by the priests, neglected by the Levite, but was embraced by the Samaritan. And having set the scene, the Lord Jesus said, which of these three do you think proves to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers? he said the one who showed him mercy and jesus said to him you go and do likewise the prescription for us tonight is to love to love the brothers and the sisters of the body of christ to love our enemies, but also to love our neighbors. …
… Now, by chance, as it happened, a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise, a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked and passed by also on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, take care of him. And whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you. So, Jesus said, which of these three do you think was a neighbor to him who fell among thieves? And he, the lawyer, said, the one who showed mercy on him. Then Jesus said to him, go and do likewise. …
I'd like to invite you to take out of your bulletin, your GPS, your Grow, Pray, and Study Guide. If you're watching at home, I'd like to encourage you to have a pen and paper handy. You'll find there's a place to take notes here, and then on the backside, you'll find our daily scripture readings that all tie back into today's message. I'd like to encourage you to be people who read your Bible every day and to find these scriptures that might encourage you to continue to think about what we're talking about today. So we continue in our series on the issues that divide us. One of those divisive issues in our country today is how we look at how we ensure that health care happens for the vulnerable in our midst. And really a whole host of other questions around health care and the role that government plays in that. And the Atlantic Monthly has said this last year that the question that will decide the 2016 election is how we will address health care needs of Americans beginning in 2017. That this will be at front and center of the debate, of the presidential debates this fall. You don't hear as much about it today, but when you get to having one Republican and one Democrat facing off for president, there are very different solutions about how we're going to solve some of these really important problems. …
… A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So to a Levite, so now we've got a priest and a Levite, these religious leaders. When he came to the place and saw him, he passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, a guy who's not even really welcome in this particular part of the world, as he traveled, he came where the man was, and when he saw him, he took pity on him. Let's remember that word today. And he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day, so he spends the night there. The next day, he takes out two denarii, two days' wages, and he gives them to the end caper. And he says, look after him. And when I return, I'll reimburse you, another key word to remember, for any extra expense you may have. In other words, I think I've got it set up, but I don't know how long the guy's going to need to recover. I don't know how long he's going to be here. I don't know what else you're going to need to do to help him. But whatever you do, just keep tab of it. And when I get back, I'll pay you back for everything. And then Jesus asked the question, which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands …
… and he fell among robbers who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance, a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. Now you might think the priest and the Levite were being heartless for avoiding the man in trouble, But as people listened to this story back then, they may have applauded those two church officials. You see, they may well have been doing the right thing according to the letter of the law. According to the law, an upright religious person was made ceremonially unclean by touching a dead body. So if the man was dead, this priest and Levite were supposed to stay away according to their law. Since the man could have been dead, many people during Jesus' time figured those religious leaders were right in what they did. You see Jesus' point, don't you? …
… thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him what? Half dead. Now by chance, a certain priest came down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise, a Levite, which I hate that they got to go ahead and tarnish my name like that. A Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said to him, take care of him. And whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you. So which of these three, the priest, the Levite, or the Samaritan, do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves? …
… this is really, really bad. I need to do something to help. I can make a difference. I'm here. And so spontaneously, this guy stopped. And we see this story in Luke chapter 10, verse 33, when the Samaritan saw the wounded man. Like, praise God he cared, right? Praise God for every time you care about someone in need. He stopped and took pity on the injured man. He went to him and bandaged his wounds and pouring oil and wine. And then he put the man on his own donkey and he brought them to an inn and he took care of him. He found a Motel 6, you know, and he said, hey, we'll put you up here. And he said to the innkeeper the next day, he came back and took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. And he said, take care of this guy. Look after him. And when I return, I will reimburse you for any expense that you may have. I love this story. The good Samaritan comes along. …
… That's the role that the desire for wealth plays in our lives. In Luke chapter 12, we read that Jesus was teaching and in the middle of that, there was somebody, well, let me just read it. Someone in the crowd while Jesus was teaching said to him, teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me. Now, that's interesting. How many times maybe you've seen, I've seen many, many times families who ended up torn apart because a parent or a grandparent did a lousy job of preparing the family for the inheritance and what was going to happen and who was going to manage it and whether it was distributed fairly, all of these things. And so brother or sister, brothers and brothers come to hate each other, or at least dislike each other, no longer talk to each other because the inheritance, that's what's happening right here too. Tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me. To the man who shouted, Jesus offered these words of warning. Take care, be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. I'll leave that on the screen for a moment, if you'll put it back up there for a moment. And I'd like for you to say that last part with me, what's in capitalized? One's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. See, Jesus is trying to make something really clear to us about where life is found. I memorized that scripture probably 35 or 40 years ago because I never wanted to forget …
