One day in a place where Jesus had just finished praying, one of His disciples requested, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, even as John also taught his disciples.

… Luke chapter 11, and you'll recognize it once we get to verse number two. One day Jesus was praying. In a certain place, when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples. I'm going to read this. That was in the NIV version where I normally read. I'm going to read this in the New King James Version because it's more familiar to many of us who heard it growing up. So if you're confused looking on your Bible, this is a little different translation than we normally use. So he said to them, when you pray, say, our father in heaven, hallowed be your name. There is no other name. Hallowed be your name. There is no other name. Your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread and forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. …
Luke 23:46. THERE is one peculiarity about the life of our Lord Jesus Christ which everybody must have noticed who has carefully read the four Gospels, namely, that He was a Man of much prayer. He was mighty as a Preacher, for even the officers who were sent to arrest Him said, "Never man spoke like this Man." But He appears to have been even mightier in prayer, if such a thing could be possible! We do not read that His disciples ever asked Him to teach them to preach, but we are told that, "as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, one of His disciples said unto Him, Lord, teach us to pray." He had no doubt been praying with such amazing fervor that His disciples realized that He was a master of the holy art of prayer and they, therefore, desired to learn the secret for themselves. The whole life of our Lord Jesus Christ was one of prayer. Though we are often told about His praying, we feel that we scarcely need to be informed of it, for we know that He must have been a Man of prayer. His acts are the acts of a prayerful Man. His words speak to us like the words of One whose heart was constantly lifted up in prayer to His Father. You could not imagine that He would have breathed out such blessings upon men if He had not first breathed in the atmosphere of Heaven! He must have been much in prayer or He could not have been so abundant in service and so gracious in sympathy. …
In addition to being condescending and comforting, this fact of our Savior praying shows the intimate communion there is between Christ and all the members of His mystical body. It is not only we who have to pray, but He who is our Head bowed in august Majesty before the Throne of Grace. Throughout the narratives of the four Evangelists, one is struck with the many times that mention is made of Christ's prayers. At His Baptism, it was while He was praying that "the Heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape, like a dove upon Him, and a Voice came from Heaven which said, You are My Beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." On another occasion, we read that, "as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, one of His disciples said unto Him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples." On the Mount of Transfiguration, "as He prayed, the fashion of His Countenance was altered, and His raiment was white and glistering." Jesus was emphatically "a Man of prayer." After a long day of teaching the people and healing the sick, instead of seeking repose, He would spend the whole night in prayer to God or, at another time, rising up a great while before day, He would depart into a solitary place and there pray for the needed strength for the new day's duties. …
… It was his three friends who fell back and fell away. that's why i think it's significant when you turn to luke chapter 11 verse 1 we are told that after jesus completed a period of prayer one of his disciples evidently a spokesman for the group came to him and said lord teach us to pray as john taught his disciples to pray in that request i find at least two things one is that john in his discipleship program put a strong focus on prayer. And secondly, it was what Jesus' disciples asked him to do for them. They'd been with him now almost two years. They had a front seat when he stood to preach. They had watched him minister. And yet, as far as we know, they never came to him and said, Lord, teach us to preach. They did come and say, teach us to pray. we usually ask of someone else the best that that person can give us. We ask of a banker, teach us to invest. …
