Sermons on Luke 7:8

For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes, and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.For I also am a man set under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

WHO IS THIS | Chad Veach

… that is why I do not even consider myself worthy to come to you but say the word and my servant will be healed for I myself am a man under authority with soldiers under me I tell this one go and he goes I tell that one come and he comes I say to my servant do this and he does it when Jesus heard this he was amazed at him turning to the crowd following him he said I tell you I have not found such great faith even in Israel than the men who had been sent to return to the house and found the servant healed. I'm going to give you four things to write down today. Write down point number one. Faith grows where humility lives. Anytime you see humility, you'll watch faith take off. Notice the language of the centurion. He says, Lord, I'm not worthy for you to come under my roof. I'm not worthy for you to step into my house. Say the word and my servant will be healed. He is showing great humility. I just love this about the centurion because he wasn't saying, you know, I got some authority and I know who I am. He is saying, I actually know who you are. …

… The Roman centurion goes on. For I too am a man set under authority with soldiers under man. I say to one go and he goes and to another come and he comes and to my servant do this and he does it. Here's the thing. This is actually a quite theologically incorrect statement. Check it. The Roman centurion says, Jesus, you're kind of like me. I don't have any of my own authority but people obey me because I represent Caesar's authority And that's kind of like you, Jesus. You don't have your own authority, but you represent God's authority. And so people obey you because you represent God. Wait, what? As a point of fact, Mr. Centurion, Jesus does have authority in himself. Jesus was not just God's representative. He was fully God. He could speak to a disease or demon or death itself and send it fleeing. The point is this Roman centurion's understanding of Jesus has not risen to Nicene Creed level. He doesn't even recognize Jesus as deity. …

We're going to be in Luke chapter 7. Everybody just remain standing just for the reading of the word. And then I'll have you seated here in just a moment. We're going to be in Luke chapter 7, verses 1 through 10. As I was preparing to preach today, we have been in this series, See King Jesus. And a pastor said that the series was done last week on Easter Sunday. And I just was like, hey, can I just do a bonus week? Can I just sneak in? Because it's been so powerful what God is doing. And so this is just a bonus week. This is just a bonus week of seeing King Jesus. We're going to be in Luke chapter 7, starting at verse 1. Here's what it says. It says, when Jesus had finished saying all of this to the people who were listening. Now, any nosy people is like, what was Jesus talking about? When Jesus said all of this, what was he saying? …

Prayer that Amazes Jesus
David Platt, 2026-01-28

… Just say the word and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority with soldiers under me. I tell this one go and he goes, that one come and he comes. I say to my servant, do this and he does it. When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. and said to those following him, truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. Is that not incredible? Jesus was amazed by this centurion's faith. And if you read the rest of the story, Jesus says, go home and you'll find that your servant has been healed just like you believed would happen when I just spoke a word. so then you've got this picture jesus amazed by the centurion's faith the other time we see jesus amazed is in mark chapter 6 but it's very different it's when jesus goes to his hometown people around him start taking offense at him and they're doubting that he can heal or help people like they've heard and listen to verses 5 and 6 they say he could not jesus could not do any miracles there except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. So Jesus is amazed two times in the Bible. One time by great faith, the other time by lack of faith. So with that set up, here's the question I want to ask you today to really think about right where you're sitting right now, is Jesus more likely to be amazed by your faith …
