Sermons on Luke 7:9

When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.”When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

… go and he goes I tell that one come and he comes I say to my servant do this and he does it when Jesus heard this he was amazed at him turning to the crowd following him he said I tell you I have not found such great faith even in Israel than the men who had been sent to return to the house and found the servant healed. I'm going to give you four things to write down today. Write down point number one. Faith grows where humility lives. Anytime you see humility, you'll watch faith take off. Notice the language of the centurion. He says, Lord, I'm not worthy for you to come under my roof. I'm not worthy for you to step into my house. Say the word and my servant will be healed. He is showing great humility. I just love this about the centurion because he wasn't saying, you know, I got some authority and I know who I am. He is saying, I actually know who you are. …

… and some John Piper books, and then come back and talk. No, when Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him. Turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant alive and well. though theologically flawed, this man's faith is anchored in Jesus's compassion. And get this, that kind of faith makes Jesus marvel. Make sure you see the contrast. The religious leaders make their case based on the centurion's worthiness. The centurion puts all his hope instead in Jesus's mercy. And even with wrong theology, it gets Jesus's attention because listen, this Roman centurion had understood the heart of the gospel. God does not love you because there's worthiness in your heart. He loves you because there's goodness and grace in his. Listen, I think getting theology right is super important. But getting your theology right does not make Jesus marvel. Understanding the greatness of his compassion does. …

We're going to be in Luke chapter 7. Everybody just remain standing just for the reading of the word. And then I'll have you seated here in just a moment. We're going to be in Luke chapter 7, verses 1 through 10. As I was preparing to preach today, we have been in this series, See King Jesus. And a pastor said that the series was done last week on Easter Sunday. And I just was like, hey, can I just do a bonus week? Can I just sneak in? Because it's been so powerful what God is doing. And so this is just a bonus week. This is just a bonus week of seeing King Jesus. We're going to be in Luke chapter 7, starting at verse 1. Here's what it says. It says, when Jesus had finished saying all of this to the people who were listening. Now, any nosy people is like, what was Jesus talking about? When Jesus said all of this, what was he saying? …

… But he had such profound affection for the man, he was brokenhearted that he was dying. When Jesus heard this, he marveled at him and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him. I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith." Wonderful. A Roman centurion with more faith than Jesus found in the people of Israel. Verse 10, "'When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.'" The Lord healed his slave, gave the man back his slave. That's a good relationship. That's a loving relationship. That's a relationship in which He says to the guy, go, and he goes. That's how it works. But He loved him as well. Now, we're talking about human relationships, folks. You understand that, right? Not spiritual relationships. In Christ, Galatians 3.28, there's neither bond nor free, right? In the kingdom, those things don't even exist. There's neither male nor female, June or Greek, bond or free. So we're simply talking about slave relationships. …
