Jesus: His Message and His Mission (Part 1 of 2)
Alistair Begg, 2026-09-15 · Scripture reading

… the kingdom of God is near. The kingdom of God is near. In other words, God's rule over people's hearts and lives is being established. And when we think of the proximity of the kingdom of God, we ought to think of it in terms of Jesus. The kingdom of God is close to people in the person of Jesus. And this, of course, will be worked out throughout the rest of Mark's gospel. But for now, you should note just this, that essentially the kingdom of God is God's rule. In fact, when we studied the overview of the Bible, we used the language, I think, of Goldsworthy that was picked up by Vaughn Roberts, where he spoke about God's people in God's place under God's rule and authority, that that was expressive of his kingdom, that his rule is in the hearts of people, and one day his rule will be so clearly established that there will be, in terms of Revelation 21, a new heaven and a new earth in which dwells righteousness. There will be no tears, there will be no more sorrow or sighing, there will be no more cancer, there will be no more need for trips to the emergency room, there will be no seminars on divorce recovery. There will be none of that necessary when the kingdom of God is established in its fullness. And in an encounter with Jesus, he comes to rule and reign in the lives and hearts of individuals, anticipating the day when his rule will be established in its finality. And I don't think that the picture …

Earthly Stories with a Heavenly Meaning
Skip Heitzig, 2026-08-02

… verse 14. Now after John, that is John the Baptist, was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God and saying the time is fulfilled. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the gospel. Go down to verse 21 of chapter 1 of Mark. Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, not as the scribes. Then turn to chapter 2, verse 1. And again he entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that he was in the house. immediately many gathered together so that there was no longer room to receive them. There's the crowds growing, not even near the door. And he preached the word to them. Look at verse 13 of chapter 2. Then he went out again by the sea, and all the multitudes came to him, and he taught them. …

The Coming Of The King
Jack Hibbs, 2026-05-20

… If that's true, that's because God's kingdom is in your heart. Mark chapter 1, verse 14. Now after John was put into prison, Jesus came to Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. And saying, the time is fulfilled. The kingdom of God is at hand. repent and believe in the gospel. I wrote myself this note. It's at the bottom of page seven. I said, notice here, the kingdom is inseparable from, number one, the timing. Look at Mark 1, verse 14. Number two, the presence. Number three, repentance. Number four, faith. And number five, the message. The kingdom is all about that. Jesus said to believe on him and to repent and believe and you shall have eternal life. Awesome. Oh, I have too much. We're out of time. Revelation 3.20. That's a good one. Psalm 24, verse 7 and 9. That's really great too. Matthew 6.33. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you? Think of that. What about Luke 10, 9? And Jesus, and he sent them out and healed the sick there and say to them, the kingdom of God has come near to you. That's amazing. …

From Nets to New Adventure
Skip Heitzig, 2026-04-12

… Back in verse 14, can I remind you of what we already read? Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom, saying the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospel. So for six months after the Jordan River, after meeting Jesus and believing he's the Messiah, now they're back home. And what are they doing? They're fishing. And they're in the boat fishing, they're talking, they're fishing more, and they're talking more, and they're fishing more, and they're talking more. And they're probably saying things like, wasn't that whole thing at the Jordan River awesome? Remember when the heavens opened, the dove came down on him, and we heard that booming voice from heaven, and that was amazing. Where do you think he is now? And if he's the Messiah, when is he going to set up his kingdom, and will we ever see him again? Then he shows up in town and he starts preaching in town. And then on another day, they're out working in their boats just off the shore of the Lake of Galilee. And Jesus comes walking on the shore and calls to them in a voice that they could hear, follow me and I will make you become fishers of men. Now, just a note about their nets, because these kind of things, I geek out on these kind of things. The fishing they did in the Sea of Galilee was with these little nets that were circular. …

The Small Beginnings of Great Things
Skip Heitzig, 2026-03-29

Verse 14. Now, after John was put in prison, John the Baptist was put in prison. We'll get more into that in chapter 6 as to why. Jesus came to Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. Remember, the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, verse 1. Now he's in Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God and saying, here's the beginning of his sermon, the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel. okay this is not the very beginning of the ministry of Jesus again Mark leaves a lot out and what he leaves out again because he has a purpose in writing an agenda to follow he leaves out the events in John chapter 1 chapter 2 chapter 3 and chapter 4 and what happens is in those chapters and before this is Jesus is down south in Jerusalem in Judea it's his Judean ministry and while he's in Judea he meets with a guy named Nicodemus at night he cleanses the temple he gets a cord of whips and drives people out of the temple he also has a Judean ministry for about six months he then goes up to Samaria to meet a woman at the well of Samaria she comes to believe in him the Samaritan population a large majority of them come to believe in Jesus and then John the Baptist gets arrested by Herod because John the Baptist is very vocal about Herod's sin …

The Worship of Prayer (Matthew 6:9-10)
John MacArthur, 2023-06-18

… to Mark 1, 14 and 15. Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of God, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, so here is the gospel of God. The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel. You want to enter the kingdom? Repent and believe the gospel. So when we pray, Your kingdom come, we're praying for people to be saved. We're like the men that Paul is speaking of in Timothy when he says, I want holy men to lift up hands and pray always, because God is saving His people. I want your prayers to be to that end. So part of the advance of the kingdom, and obviously the initial part, is the matter of salvation. The kingdom advances and grows. The kingdom that is in your midst, the kingdom that is the same as the church in this age, that kingdom moves forward with the salvation of sinners. …

… that Jesus was preaching the gospel. Back to chapter 1, verse 14, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of God, the good news from God, the good news of forgiveness, saying, the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospel." So he's preaching the gospel. And again, the good news is forgiveness. But how does he convince people that he can forgive sin? One thing to say that, how do you prove it? Well, He had done many miracles. Mark records in the first chapter His power over demons, His power over disease. Mark talks about His teaching with authority, verse 27. His teaching was something that they had never seen before, and then He commanded the unclean spirits and they obeyed Him. And this is His ministry. He comes to preach the gospel of forgiveness, and He proves that He can forgive sin by demonstrating the power of God, which is His own power, in miracles. He has demonstrated His authority over disease, His authority over demons, and that was visible. …
