A Day in the Life of Jesus (Part 1 of 3)
Alistair Begg, 2026-09-17 · Scripture reading

… authority, not as the teachers of the law. Just then, a man in their synagogue, who was possessed by an evil spirit, cried out, What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us. I know who you are, the Holy One of God. Be quiet, said Jesus sternly. Come out of him. The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, What is this, a new teaching and with authority? He even gives orders to evil spirits, and they obey him. News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to wait on them. …

… teaching, he taught as one who had authority. And then a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. You see, the demons know what others miss. The demons realize what they're up against in this great supernatural conflict. Be quiet, said Jesus sternly. Come out of him. The evil spirit shook the man violently, and he came out of him with a shriek. Now, people read their Bibles and they say, what is that about? What it is about is about the one who is King and Lord of creation, giving indications of his kingly authority. If he is sovereign over all of the earth, if he is the Lord of creation, if he is the King of kings, then do you think he's going to be unsettled in his mission by a man with a violent, demonic spirit? No, he'll deal with it. …

The Astonishing Authority of Christ
Skip Heitzig, 2026-04-19

… their synagogue with an unclean spirit. He has a demon. And he cried out. Literally, he screamed. He shrieked. That'd be an interesting day at church. Saying, let us alone. What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, be quiet and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, what is this? What new doctrine is this? For, here's the word again, with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. And immediately his fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee. Interesting sermon. The delegate, Jesus, stands up, reads his text, gives an exposition of whatever text he preached or spoke from. We're not told. I wish perhaps we were, but he is giving his sermon and his sermon gets interrupted by a demon-possessed shriek. Now there's two things striking about this little story here. It strikes me. Number one, you got a demon-possessed guy in church. …

God’s Good Design for Rest
David Platt, 2025-10-22

… of an unclean demon. He cried out with a loud voice, ha, what have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. Jesus rebuked him, saying, be silent, come out of him. When the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. They were all amazed, said to one another, what is this word? With authority and power, he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out. Jesus is not just teaching on the Sabbath, he's healing people on the Sabbath, and he keeps doing it, specifically on the Sabbath. And the religious leaders are furious that he has the audacity to help and heal people on the Sabbath. And a couple of chapters later, Jesus looks at them in the eye and Luke chapter six, verse five, talking about himself as the son of man, Jesus said to them, the son of man is Lord of the Sabbath. Jesus says, fellas, I've got news for you. …

The Sin God Never Forgives (Mark 3:20-35)
John MacArthur, 2023-05-14

What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth, the demon says? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. And the Baptist knows who He is, the Father knows who He is, the Spirit knows who He is, and the demons know who He is as well. That evidence of the person of Jesus Christ continues through these opening chapters. In chapter 2, as you remember from our previous message, Jesus says to the paralytic, "'Son, your sins are forgiven.' And the scribes who were there say, "'He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God alone? And so Jesus then heals the paralytic and gives evidence of the fact that He can forgive sin because He can heal, and only God can heal, so He as God can also forgive sin. We find at the end of chapter 2 a very interesting statement, the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath, Sabbath. He is superior to the law. …
