… found him, they exclaimed, Everyone is looking for you. Jesus replied, Let us go somewhere else, to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there also. That is why I have come. So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. Father, we ask now that you will help us in studying the Bible for clarity of thought, for brevity of expression. for a sense that we are under the tutelage of you, the living God, that you are the one who teaches through your Word by the Holy Spirit, so that we might be prepared to sit up, to pay attention, and to say, Speak, Lord, speak to me. And we ask it humbly in Christ's name. Amen. Easter has reminded us of the fact that what we are dealing with is historical material, that Easter itself is a historical event, that it actually happened, that it involved real people in real places at a real moment in time. So much so that when we ask why it is that the small band of followers—men and women who had already begun to follow Jesus—why it was that although they had been in hiding for fear of their lives, they had come out of hiding to face the challenge that was not only presented by the religious authorities but also by the persecuting Roman Empire. Why it would be that they were prepared, at the risk of their very lives, to face all the persecution that would come their way? The answer is absolutely clear, and that is that these individuals were …

Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, I will be clean. And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. and Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once and said to him see that you say nothing to anyone but go show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded for a proof to them but he went out and began to talk freely about it and to spread the news so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town but was out in desolate places and people were coming to him from every quarter. And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered there so that there was no more room, not even at the door. …
We are still in Mark chapter 1. We have not made it out of the first chapter yet. Turn in your Bibles to Mark 1, verses 35 to 39 this morning. You know, a lot of churches try to cover a whole book in like eight weeks or something, but here at Calvary, our vision is to help you learn your Bible, love your neighbor, and live in freedoms. That's why we crawl through it. We want to get everything we can out of the text and what God is speaking to us. So maybe next week we'll be done with chapter one, but who knows? We're not quite sure. I want to really quickly, too, before we dive in, just encourage you to come this Wednesday. You heard us talk about it in announcements, but Frank Turek is going to be with us in the house. He's an incredible apologist, and he's going to be delivering a great message on that topic. So this is your opportunity to invite skeptics, doubters, who have questions about Christianity and the Bible, because Frank's going to be tackling those. …

… Everyone is looking for you. And he said to them, Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also. So for that is why I came out. And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. I think you know that I like to read books, like to read mostly theology and history, but believe it or not, one of my little sub-genres that I have read a lot of books over the years is I have read a lot of business time management sort of books. Now, it's not where I go to get my theological bread and butter. They're sort of like, I think of them sort of like Skittles. They're good. You wouldn't want to make your whole diet out of it. I've tried, but you wouldn't want to. But I read one or two of them a year. After a while, they tend to say a lot of the same things, but I almost always find some helpful reminder or some little tidbit of practical advice that I can implement in my life. …
… authority in the synagogue you see there in that section and he cast out a demon in verses 29 through 34, he performs some more miracles. And then in verse 38 there, Jesus says, let us go on to the next towns that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out. So throughout chapter one, you see Jesus doing two things. He's preaching the gospel, he's teaching with authority, and he's performing miracles and casting out demons. And as you can expect of one who is preaching with authority and performing miracles. We see there in verse 28 that Mark says, and at once his fame spread everywhere throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. Jesus is becoming famous. And so you, as the reader, are supposed to be asking the question, who is Jesus? What is he here for? What is his mission? He says that he came to preach the gospel to people, but why is he healing? How does that fit in to his ministry? So that's where our text in Mark chapter 2 picks up tonight. So if you turn there with me, Mark chapter 2, verses 1 through 12, this is God's holy, inerrant, and sufficient word. And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, …
