… to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there also. That is why I have come. So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. Father, we ask now that you will help us in studying the Bible for clarity of thought, for brevity of expression. for a sense that we are under the tutelage of you, the living God, that you are the one who teaches through your Word by the Holy Spirit, so that we might be prepared to sit up, to pay attention, and to say, Speak, Lord, speak to me. And we ask it humbly in Christ's name. Amen. Easter has reminded us of the fact that what we are dealing with is historical material, that Easter itself is a historical event, that it actually happened, that it involved real people in real places at a real moment in time. So much so that when we ask why it is that the small band of followers—men and women who had already begun to follow Jesus—why it was that although they had been in hiding for fear of their lives, they had come out of hiding to face the challenge that was not only presented by the religious authorities but also by the persecuting Roman Empire. Why it would be that they were prepared, at the risk of their very lives, to face all the persecution that would come their way? The answer is absolutely clear, and that is that these individuals were completely convinced that Jesus Christ had risen from the dead. They were in absolutely no doubt. …

Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, I will be clean. And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. and Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once and said to him see that you say nothing to anyone but go show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded for a proof to them but he went out and began to talk freely about it and to spread the news so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town but was out in desolate places and people were coming to him from every quarter. And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered there so that there was no more room, not even at the door. …
We are still in Mark chapter 1. We have not made it out of the first chapter yet. Turn in your Bibles to Mark 1, verses 35 to 39 this morning. You know, a lot of churches try to cover a whole book in like eight weeks or something, but here at Calvary, our vision is to help you learn your Bible, love your neighbor, and live in freedoms. That's why we crawl through it. We want to get everything we can out of the text and what God is speaking to us. So maybe next week we'll be done with chapter one, but who knows? We're not quite sure. I want to really quickly, too, before we dive in, just encourage you to come this Wednesday. You heard us talk about it in announcements, but Frank Turek is going to be with us in the house. He's an incredible apologist, and he's going to be delivering a great message on that topic. I think you know that I like to read books, like to read mostly theology and history, but believe it or not, one of my little sub-genres that I have read a lot of books over the years is I have read a lot of business time management sort of books. Now, it's not where I go to get my theological bread and butter. They're sort of like, I think of them sort of like Skittles. They're good. You wouldn't want to make your whole diet out of it.
