… make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and his diet was locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching and saying, After me one is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I baptize you with water. but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opening and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him and a voice came out of the heavens. …
… messenger, to the arrival of the messenger. And so John came, verse 4, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Now, I would encourage you to read the comparative treatments of John as you find them in Matthew and Luke and also in the Gospel of John. And when you put the pieces together—because remember, the Gospels are a bit like newspaper reporters. They all report similar materials. Sometimes they all report the exact same stuff, but they report it from their own vantage point and from their own perspective. But what you discover, without question, is that the arrival of this messenger was the arrival of a strange man. He was a strange man. He had a very interesting beginning. The details of his birth, you can read in Luke chapter 1, verse 41 and following. He had a very strange beginning, but also he was pretty strange by this point in his life. It's not usual for people to be identified by their clothes and their diet. Maybe the Old Testament prophets, but I can think of many in the New Testament whose lifestyle is described for us in this way, and therefore, it must be of note. And verse 6, we're told that he wore clothing made of camel's hair with a leather belt round his waist. Now, this is a kind of prophetic look that he had, if you like. People would have said, Why are you dressing up like that? Do you think you're one of …
… way. A voice of one calling in the desert, prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel's hair with a leather belt round his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message. After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I'm not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God for his word. Father, we pray that as we turn now to the Bible, that you will enable us both to speak and to listen in such a way that your word comes home with conviction and compulsion to our minds, calling us to repentance and to faith and to obedience and to all the encouragement that is provided for us in thinking again of the good news. …

Father, help us now as we turn to the Bible, that you will be our teacher, that the Holy Spirit will enable us to think properly, to respond humbly, and that we might find that, as it were, Christ stands in the midst of us, not only as the one who orchestrates our praise, but also as the one who preaches the Word home to our hearts. Only you, O God, can accomplish this, and it is to you we look. In Jesus' name, amen. …
… he went into all the country around the Jordan. He was preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah, a voice, one calling in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him. Even valleys shall be filled in and every mountain hill made low. The crooked road shall become straight. The rough will become smooth and all the people will see God's salvation. John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, you brood of vipers who warned you to flee from the coming wrath, produce fruit in keeping with repentance. I'm gonna give you six things to write down. Write down number one today. God prepares you through repentance. The way that God gets you ready for what he has for you is through the act of repentance. And if you don't know what repentance is, repentance is a turning away. Repentance is making a 180. …
… Third characteristic of John, John was preparing the future. Verse 4, John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Then all the land of Judea and those from Jerusalem went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. He's preparing for the future by doing two things. Preaching, baptizing. Preaching is proclamation. Announcing the king is coming. Baptizing, it says it's a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Okay, here's something you may not know. Baptism was not a Christian invention. Baptism did not start with the church. That's how most people think of it. Baptism was of Jewish origin. The Jews baptized all the time for a number of reasons. They had little pools called a mikvah for ritualistic cleansing. But in particular, if you were a Gentile and non-Jew and you wanted to convert and believe in the one true God of Israel, so you want to convert to Judaism, you had to do three things. …
