Every once in a while, I have a chance to work with young preachers, and I always talk to them about the importance of introductions. People's time is important. Don't waste it. Get right into it. I can still hear the words of my mother. I could wrap up all of her counsel in four words. Get it said, son. …

… pass in those days, the days of John the Baptist at the Jordan River, it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. John the Baptist has been preaching down at the Jordan River for quite some time, at least several months, some think even a year. Most places ministry between three months and 30 months. He was there long enough to garner interest so that people would flood to him from Jerusalem. Hundreds, thousands of them came. So he has been there for quite some time, doing his thing, baptizing people, making his proclamation, announcing the coming of Messiah. But then one day, he shows up. One day, John looks out at the line that is formed coming toward him, and he sees a few heads back, him, the one. He didn't know he was coming. Nobody sent him a text or an email or a phone call. He just showed up, and he showed up in line to be baptized. Now, Mark, using the economy of words doesn't go into the details that the other gospel writers do because Mark has an agenda to show the servant is on the move very, very rapidly. It just says, it came to pass in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Matthew, however, tells us when this happens that John the Baptist tried to stop him, to prevent him. John said, I need to be baptized by you. And you're coming to me to be baptized? …
… I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptize you with water, He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Here He affirms the deity of Christ as the one superior to even the greatest of all prophets and the one who can dispense the very member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, into the life of those who believe. You have immediately after that His baptism, and when He comes out of the water in chapter verse 10, the heavens open up, and again referring to the Holy Spirit, the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him. It was not a dove. It didn't look like a dove. It's simply the picture of the Spirit's presence in some visible form landing on Jesus in a gentle way. And at that moment, not only is the Spirit thus affirming His deity, but a voice comes out of the heavens, You are My beloved Son in You. I am well pleased. Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. …
… It says in verse 9, it says, It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. and immediately coming up from the water, he saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove. I think New American Standard said he saw heavens open or opening. and the Holy Spirit descending upon him like a dove. John's gospel adds a statement where it says, and the Holy Spirit comes upon him in the form of a dove and remained. So there is this continuous resting presence upon Jesus always. So in this moment, we have the heavens parting, the heavens opening. is actually a term that is used in Matthew's gospel, chapter 27. And it's used to describe something that happened after the death of Christ. When he died, it says the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom. And it's like a four to six inch thick curtain. And it was torn from God's end to man's end. …
